inhibited his life, but also made it more rewarding. Can you write about your own experience of shyness? Or that of other people’s?
THINGS TO REMEMBER Draw upon your own experience. Select a single instance, whether this is an opportunity that you have passed up, or something, an activity, or an interest, that you have been afraid to try. Explain to the reader as much of the context as you can – where it took place, at what point in your life, etc.
Provide a definition of shyness. What do you understand by shyness? Is it a reluctance to participate? Or an involuntary feeling of withdrawal? It would be good to place this portion close to the beginning of your piece.
If you find yourself unable to write about your own shyness, that is, if you disagree with the premise of the assignment, try to identify shyness in others that you have known. Did you come to an understanding about why they were unable to participate? Conclude by connecting the final paragraph to the opening. Draw together your specific instance, and your insights, but try to give the reader something different to think about. It often works well to finish a piece with something new, though not elaborate. This need not be the sort of point that you would want to spin a paragraph out of! Try to write 1-2 pages.
