My personal devotional for today came from Psalm 71. “O God, you have helped me from my earliest childhood, and I have constantly testified to others of the wonderful things you do. And now that I am old and gray don’t forsake me. Give me time to tell this new generation, (and their children too) about all your mighty miracles.” (17-18 LB) Except for the “old and gray” part I really like those two verses. Safe drivers know the importance of looking in the rear view mirror. But too much of that invites an accident. Our journey together at Eastmont has been good. There have been fender benders that kept us humble and enough blessings to keep us hopeful. In a Peanuts comic strip, Lucy was dispensing psychiatric advice to Charlie Brown. She said, “Life is like a deck chair on a ship. Some place their chair at the back of the ship to see where they have been. Others place it at the front to see where they are going.” Charlie Brown mutters. “I can’t get my chair unfolded” I don’t know about you, but I like standing at the front of the ship (although I’ve experienced Charlie Brown’s dilemma at times). Every generation is important. I believe God wants us to reach as many as possible. The two most recent generations are the largest most educated in our history. But each generation matters to God. I’ve attended enough conferences, bought enough CD’s and tried enough programs to know there is no substitute for passion and prayer in reaching the lost. Thank you for standing with me at the front of this ship. Thank you for looking forward more than backwards. Thank you for praying, believing, serving so we can reach our community for Christ. Throughout our congregation there are islands of hope called Sunday School classes. More and more are finding creative ways to reach their generation. We are doing a lot and that thrills my heart. Dr. Allen Jackson will be with us Sunday sharing a challenging message. I look forward to worshiping together.
