(MECHANICAL) REGULAR EXAMINATION 2005 OF 04-BATCH STRENGTH OF MATERIALS-II Dated: 02-12-2005. Time Allowed: 03 Hours. Max:Marks-80 NOTE: ATTEMPT ANY FIVE QUESTIONS. DRAW DIAGRAMS WHEREVER NECESSARY. Q.No. 01 02 (a) Marks How does Haigh’s predict failure in the member subjected to complex stresses? Discuss theoretically and graphically. [16] A cylindrical bar 30 mm in diameter is subjected to an end thrust of 3000 kg and is encased in a closely fitting sheath which reduces lateral strain by 1/3 rd of its value if free. Determine strain energy per unit volume. Modulus of elasticity and Poisson’s ratio of the material may be taken as 2 x 10 6 and 0.25. [08] The state of stress at a point is given by: σX = 2x2 + 3y – 5z; σy = 2 y2; σz = 3x + y2 + 3z - 5; τ X y = z + 4 x y - 6; τ X z = -3x + y + 1, τ y z = 0. Determine suitable body force required at point (1, -2, 3) so that these stress components become under equilibrium. [08] 03 A long cylinder of 65 mm diameter is rotating at 3500 rpm. Calculate maximum stress in the cylinder. Sketch the variation of radial and hoop stresses along the radius. The density of material is 7.5 x 10 -5 N/ mm3 , acceleration due to gravity 9810 mm/s2, Poisson’s ratio = 0.28. At what radius or radii the maximum stresses are developed. [16] Derive Lame’s equation for thick cylinders and discuss its following special cases. [16] (i) Internal pressure = P1, Ext: pressure = zero (ii) Ext: pressure=P2, Int: pressure=zero. The section of a crane hook is trapezium. At the critical section, the inner and outer sides are 45 mm and 30 mm respectively and depth is 80 mm. The centre of curvature of section is at a distance of 65 mm from inner fibres and load line is 55 mm from inner fibres. Determine the maximum load the hook can carry if maximum stress is not to exceed 140 N/mm2. [16] Find the ratio of strength of a solid steel column to that of hollow steel column having same cross sectional area. Internal diameter of hollow column is 5/7 of its external diameter. Both the columns are of the same length and are pinned at both ends. [16] During creep rupture testing of an alloy following observations were recorded: Stress (Kg/ mm2 ) Temperature (0C) Rupture time (hrs) 6.6 1080 6 6.6 1000 350 3.6 1080 450 12.6 1005 4 A turbine blade made of this alloy is to be replaced after a period of 35000 hours. Calculate the stress level that can be safely placed upon the turbine blade if operating temperature is 850 0C. Assume Larson -Miller parameter applies to the material. 08 Write short notes on any three of the following. (a) Creep behaviour of Materials (c) Fatigue failure (e) Strain gauge -----------(THE END)--------(b) Castigliano’s Energy theorem. (d) Photoelasticity [16]
