THEORIES OF MOTIVATION
Prof. Douglas McGregor has introduce two theories they are called X Theory and Y Theory. Theory X and Theory Y are theories of human motivation created and developed by Douglas McGregor at the MIT Sloan School of Management in the 1960s that have been used in human resource management, organizational behavior, organizational communication and organizational development. They describe two very different attitudes toward workforce motivation. McGregor felt that companies followed either one or the other approach.

Douglas McGregor (1906 1964)


was a Management professor at the MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology ) Sloan School of Management. He identified an approach of creating an environment within which employees are motivated via authoritative, direction and control or integration and self-control, which he called theory X and theory Y, respectively.

X THEORY
This theory is based on papa knows best . In other

words , a manager has thorough knowledge and excludes workers from decision making process . A manager has authority and power to take decisions. The workers should follow whatever decisions are taken by the manager. X theory is base on the traditional approach to human behavior

ASSUMPTIONS OF X THEORY
The assumptions generally held by the manager in this theory. These assumptions about human nature are negative in their approach. Average Human beings are LAZY They DISLIKE WORK and try to AVOID it. Average Employee try to AVOID RESPONSIBILITY, because the relatively LITTLE AMBITION. Average Employees are not very BRIGHT.

Y THEORY
Theory Y is contrast of the X Theory. This Theory makes assumption about the people that

ASSUMPTIONS OF Y THEORY
Average human being does not Dislike work. They

enjoy work like play or rest. Employees are Self directed and Self Control for the achieving the Objective or Goal for which they are Committed. They are Innovative and Creative . Employees are having high degree of Imagination. All Employees utilize all their skill to Achieve desire goal or Objective.
