Queens’ very own, Dr. Leanne Pupchek, associate professor of the Knight School of communication, is the proud recipient of the Fulbright Scholar grant for the 2011-2012 academic year. As a result of this award, Pupchek will be teaching abroad in L’viv, Ukraine. The quirky phenomenon known as Dr. Pupchek has made Queens history because she is the first faculty ever to receive this award.

While in L’viv Ukraine, Pupchek will be a teaching at the Ukrainian Catholic University, as well as Ivan Franko National University, the oldest University in Ukraine; there, she will be able to study, teach, and research the visual vocabulary of persuasive messages. Chris Watson, a Junior, an Interpersonal Communication major notes, “I am very sad that Dr. Pupchek is not at Queens this year, but I am certain that she will make an impact on the lives of those Ukrainian students as she has impacted my life and

other students’ lives here at Queens”.

The Fulbright Award is the international educational exchange that is sponsored by the United States

State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs whose purpose is to “increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries”.

of which Dr. Leanne Pupchek was selected.

According to the Fulbright scholarship, “…these

participants [are provided] the opportunity to study, teach, and conduct research, exchange ideas, and

contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns”.
