A compound sentence is a sentence that combines two or more simple sentences (independent clauses).
There are 2 ways this can be done: With a semicolon With a comma + FANBOYS word

A complex sentence is a sentence that is made up of one independent clause and one dependent clause.
The independent clause can stand on its own: Mary went to the store The dependent clause cannot: because she wanted to buy a purse. Together they form a complex sentence: Mary went to the store because she wanted to buy a purse.

Generally, you only need a comma if the dependent clause comes first.
Example: Because I missed the bus, I was late. Dependent clause first = Yes! We need a comma. I was late because I missed the bus. Dependent clause second = No! We dont need a comma.
