SIMOTAS CONDEMNS FOX NEWS ANCHOR’S RAPE COMMENTS
Fox News co-host Bob Beckel’s deplorable on-air comments about rape remind us once again about the importance of having a rational and real dialogue about rape— one that involves identifying the crime for what it truly is. Mr. Beckel attempted to delineate a supposed distinction between “date rape” and other forms of rape which he intends for the audience to believe are more serious. This mischaracterization proves once again the real need in our society for a discourse in the interest of respecting rape survivors. I was shocked, but unfortunately not surprised, to hear about his inexcusable attitude and attempt to de-legitimize a very real and prevalent threat on our nation’s college campuses. The public response, by viewers and advocates alike, proves that we as a society have a true understanding of the importance of the language we use to describe these horrific crimes. It follows that the law should strive to respect the way we talk about these kinds of crimes. It is precisely the kind of mentality displayed by Mr. Beckel that the Rape-isRape legislation attempts to fight against by making no distinction as to “types” of rape. In order to have a truly rational conversation about this issue, we must focus on survivors and not be afraid to call rape what it really is—rape. ###
