The wheels are whirring in Seagrove as potters get ready for their spring events and kiln openings. One of the biggest events of the season is the Celebration of Spring. Potters from 37 Seagrove area shops will celebrate with kiln openings, studio tours, demonstrations, hands-on opportunities, new designs, door prizes, tasty treats and more on April 20 & 21. Pottery by Frank Neef is celebrating three years in Seagrove on June 8, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. To mark the occasion, Frank will give studio tours and demonstrate his unique process of piercing porcelain. A drawing for two wine goblets and an ikebana (dish for flower arranging) will be held at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m.

Before opening the gallery in Seagrove, Frank traveled all over the Midwest, participating in art shows and selling his art in various galleries for more than 30 years. STARworks Garden is offering a Grow Your Own Shiitake Mushrooms workshop with instructor Greg Bender, March 16, from 9 a.m. to noon. The workshop costs $20, which includes the use of special tools and materials needed to grow shiitake mushrooms, plus prepared mushroom dishes that participants can taste. STARworks Garden is also offering a Community Supported Agriculture session that begins April 10 and ends July 31. Those who enroll can expect weekly offerings of fresh seasonal produce, herbs and occasional flowers. Enrollment is $272, which averages to $16/week for the 17-week session. STARworks Glass is offering two 3-Hour Hot Glass Workshops. Participants will learn how to create glass flowers and paperweights. The workshops are offered March 23 and

April 20, both from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The workshop fee is $75. An Introduction to Glass Fusing Workshop will be held April 6, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Participants will learn how to cut flat glass, arrange the pieces into patterns and fuse them in a kiln. The workshop cost is $75. A two-day Fusing and Slumping Workshop will be held May 18, from 10 a.m. to noon, and May 19, from 1 to 2 p.m. Participants will learn how to create a fused glass project on the first day, then come back the next day to slump it. Slumping is the process of setting up a fused object so it will slump into a certain form. The fee for this workshop is $135. STARworks, in partnership with the Town of Star, will host FireFest May 3-5. FireFest is a three-day festival that celebrates the role of fire in the creation of art.

Internationally known featured artists, specializing in glass, metal and ceramics have been invited to participate, demonstrate and lecture. The special guest artists are glass artist, Hand Murta Adams, metal artist, Ben Galata and ceramic artist, Hyang Jong Oh. STARworks has a variety of activities planned for FireFest, including workshops, demonstrations, performances, entertainment and locally made food and drinks. Firefest is made possible in part thanks to an Our Town grant from the National Endowment of the Arts. STARworks is located seven miles south of Seagrove in Star.
