Effective Use of the Textbook

Students in San Diego Colleges are in the process of learning for their future. At college, these students will learn the specific skills and knowledge that they will need before they can be successful in their chosen careers.

Classes are boring
But all too often, school for students in San Diego Colleges, and students across the country for that matter, see their courses not as the preparatory instruction they need to succeed, but solely as a temporary task that they must perform well in. This misconception of the value and longevity of collegiate courses leads to a common trend among college students of passing courses without ever really learning the material. When a student understands the importance of actually learning the material being presented to them, they will be better able prepare for their future careers and be armed with the power that knowledge gives. Without taking the steps towards real learning, students in San Diego Colleges may receive passing grades but will nevertheless graduate from with their degree without ever attaining a true education. A primary way that college students in San Diego learn the material of their courses is by studying and reading from their course textbooks. Understanding how to make more effective use of their textbooks will greatly aid college students in performing their assignments as well as increase their overall comprehension of the material.

Become familiar with the book
The best way for a college student to improve the effectiveness of their study from textbooks is to get familiar with the textbook itself. The first action that a student can take to become familiar with their textbook is to look at the cover and title page of the book. If the author or authors are not recognized by the student, they might wish to look up the authors biographies online or otherwise familiarize themselves with the authors other works. This will aid the student in understanding the perspective from which the textbook was written.

Looking at the table of contents will give the student a summarized overview of what the textbook will cover by examining the chapter headings of the chapters in the book. The table of contents can then be used to quickly reference material or subject matter in later study sessions. Similarly, a student can familiarize themselves with the textbook by thoroughly examining the back of the textbook. Often, the backs of textbooks are filled with great and helpful resources for the student aid in their study.

Resources:
Such resources as indexes, glossaries, and citation pages can provide the studying student with the means to reference and learn the material found in the textbook. Indexes can be used to great extent by the student as an index will often include subjects found in the textbook with the associated page number or numbers where that subject is referenced. Glossaries can similarly be used by the student as a reference guide while studying, but their importance lies in the definition of unknown words or phrases. When a student does not understand the meaning of a course specific word, often that word will be well defined in the glossary of the textbook. By having a sound understanding of the resources available in their textbooks and how to properly approach them, students in San Diego Colleges will be better able to learn the material of their courses. With this gained knowledge they will then be able to achieve the success they desire in their future careers. Photo credit: Dave Dugdale, wohnai
