Why Be A Member? ….Our Top Reasons

Jeff Deahl, President Four Seasons Design & Remodeling

From the President of the Board
This time of year is the season for RV shows, boat shows, monster truck events and home improvement shows – all trying to get us out of the house during bad weather. But as Punxsutawney Phil reported at the first of February, SPRING is right around the corner! In a month or so we will be into rainy season and then things will start to bloom. Similarly, the seasons change for our businesses also. The winter gives us opportunities to do the things we have put on the back burner during the busiest parts of the year. We step up involvement with opportunities to learn, getting in some extra educating either through a college course or industry seminars. In today’s age of internet, we have access to all forms of additional learning. Ben Franklin once said, “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.” The sowing of seeds that we do all year, when we find the time, sprouts and grows our businesses throughout the year. In the building business, spring through fall is when we ramp things up for our busy seasons, and that, to me, always feels good. The first Saturday of May is our Remodelers Tour, and in June we will have our annual Golf Outing, which are great opportunities to chase some business and have some extra fun doing it.

Next month’s membership meeting speakers will be Greg Furnish, our state Indiana Builders Association President, and Cindy Bussell, our IBA COO. They will be traveling to our local to keep us informed of what the IBA is doing for our local and what the IBA is doing for us and our businesses as members as well. Cindy will explain the Builder Rebate Program – an incredibly simple and easy way to put rebate money back in our pockets. I’m not just spouting off, our company has been taking advantage of what we can, which has resulted in us receiving three quarterly rebate checks so far. Last year, the rebate program effectively paid our membership dues while also providing our local with a percentage rebate as well. We will be more determined to focus our buying to make this program even more advantageous. With these guests from the state level, we can gain firsthand knowledge of sources of help. It gives us the opportunity to ask question specifically of what the builders association can do for us.

To make next month’s meeting irresistible, Bob Buescher Homes has generously agreed to sponsor our dinner! They will be paying for our dinner; all we have to do is R.S.V.P and show up. How can we turn that down? And to make things even better, if you stand next to me, I’ll buy you a drink. How about that! Again, I want to thank Jeff Wilson and Bob Buescher Homes for sponsoring the meeting. See everyone there!

Jeff Deahl

….A Friendly Reminder From Your President “it makes our Association STRONGER!!!!”

Indiana Quality Assurance Builder Standards

What QABS means for you, the consumer: The Indiana Quality Assurance Standards provide new homebuyers and remodeling customers a way to measure their builder and the project against an industry approved set of standards. These Standards create a series of performance standards builders and customers can use to communicate and understand each other's expectations regarding building/remodeling projects. The Standards address the most prevalent issues that arise between the builder and the customer before the project, during the project, and most importantly, after the project is completed. All too often it is the unrealized or undiscovered expectations that create the majority of problems encountered in the building/remodeling process. The Standards will help eliminate these problems before the project even begins. What QABS means for you, the builder: One objective of the Association is to improve the community image of the industry. Towards that objective, the builders association offers you the Indiana Quality Assurance Builder Standards. The program includes a set of standards, recommended language for including the standards and mediation/binding arbitration of the standards into project contracts, and marketing information. The Standards create reasonable customer expectations regarding the building/remodeling process, and address the most prevalent issues that arise before the project, during the project, and, most importantly, after the projected is completed. The Standards eliminate the unrealized and undisclosed expectations of the customer by giving the builder/remodeler a tool to discuss, identify, and set the customer's expectations before problems arise. Yet, disputes will inevitably arise that cannot be settled between the two parties using the Standards. With that in mind, the Standards also includes a mediation/binding arbitration mechanism to provide another vehicle to dispute resolution outside the costly and time-consuming court process. Let the consumer know you are a part of the network of quality builders. Include the Indiana Quality Assurance Builder logo in print, television and radio advertising, and promote your membership with the association in press releases and brochures.

Greg Furnish IBA 2013 State President
The Builders Association of Northeast Indiana will welcome IBA’s 2013 State President Greg Furnish, CGP to the upcoming membership meeting on March 12. Greg is the 61 st President of the Indiana Builders Association. Greg is owner and President of Upright Builders based in Memphis, Indiana which is located in southeast Indiana. He has been a residential developer and custom home builder for 24 years. He has been active in the state association for 17 years. He has been active in his local, the HBA of Southern Indiana, even longer, holding several leadership positions, including local president. His passion for the association is evident in his having recorded nearly 250 Spike credits over the years. A Spike credit is earned for every new member recruited and member retained. He holds the Certified Green Professional (CGP) national designation. One of his greatest memories of his local association was the “Katrina House of Hope”. His company donated the lot, and he oversaw the construction of a 2400 sq. ft. home built entirely from donations of material and labor from countless associate and builder members. The local association sold the home and presented a check for $225,000 to the local Salvation Army’s aid in the Hurricane Katrina efforts. He and his local association have continued their support of their community by being actively involved in the rebuilding of Henryville, which was devastated by a tornado. Greg, along with other members of the association, were active in the Henryville Habitat for Humanity project where 10 homes were constructed for victims of the disaster. At age 44, Greg and his wife, Shelly, have four children: Cameron, 18; Chandler and Conner, 13; and Caleigh, 10. He is an Elder of Safe Harbor Christian Church.
