1Bs maths organisation 2013

For term one the main focus for mathematics is number. Therefore everyday modelled and group activities have been implemented on number. The school has implemented the tens program and Newmans prompts into its focus as well and this is completed every day. Additionally the hundreds chart focusing on numeral identification, forward and backward number sequences, counting by 2s, 5s and 10s is completed each day.

1 time a week on a Friday students would write down and discuss what they learned in maths for the week (Maths reflection) using a storyboard. For example- through writing, pictures, photos with captions, make a voice thread/slideshow on computer, brainstorming and listing as class, diagrams; play acting, child as teacher with partner - consolidation work.

Tens (Maths groups-15 mins. Explain tens activity on Monday.

Hundreds chart and problem solving question on newmans prompts Modelled guided- independent on Number. Teacher focuses on different strategies: doubles, friends of ten, near doubles, jump strategy, spilt strategy, largest counting on and back, number line, tens and ones. Each day it is a new strategy, teacher models the strategy first, allows students to work in pairs and then gets students to complete it individually. The activities are based on the different strategies to add and subtract.

Tuesday Maths focus: Number Tens (Maths groups-10mins)

Hundreds chart and problem solving questions on Newmans prompts. Modelled guided- independent on Number. Teacher focuses on different strategies: doubles, friends of ten, near doubles, jump strategy, spilt strategy, largest counting on and back, number line, tens and ones. Teacher models focus on measurement, gets students in groups or pairs to complete activities and then gets students to complete a measurement task individually. Thursday Other maths focus: Space and geometry Tens (Maths groups-10mins) Hundreds chart and problem solving questions on Newmans prompts. Modelled-guided-independent on space and geometry. Teacher models focus on space and geometry, gets students in groups or pairs to complete activities and then gets students to complete a measurement task individually.

Friday Maths focus: Revision of number, measurement, space and geometry. Tens (Maths groups-10mins) Hundreds chart and problem solving questions on Newmans prompts. Revision of number, measurement and space and geometry. The revision is based on what students struggled with during the week. The activities will be based on what students did not understand. Students would write down and discuss what they learned in maths for the week (Maths reflection) using a storyboard. A test is given to students every two weeks on the topics taught to identify whether students understand the content being taught.
