All teams are groups but all the groups cannot be called as teams.

Following are the characteristics for a group to become a team.  In order to be a successful team, a team must have a clear purpose. Teams work to achieve a shared goal or mission which is the driving force to make the teams work together.  The team members are interdependent and the combined efforts of them make the team successful. All the members are equally responsible for the effective accomplishment of the goals. All the team members are assigned specific task and distinct role.  Appropriate culture must be provided by the organizations to the team so that to make them effective and successful. Teams make the members realize that together they are stronger, effective and more capable rather than working individually. This makes them respect each team member and be honest with one another. A team, in order to be successful, should value each of its members and should provide freedom to share their opinions. This helps in effective decision making.
