The MS requests a channel from the BSS using a Channel Request message, and is assigned an SDCCH by the BSS. The MS then sends an IMSI Detach Indication message to the BSS on the SDCCH, which is forwarded to the MSC/VLR. The MSC/VLR sends a Location Cancel Request to the HLR, which marks the IMSI as detached and removes it from its registry, sending a Location Cancel Acknowledgment back to the MSC/VLR.
