MEDIA ADVISORY March 8, 2013 At approximately 9:15am today a gorilla keeper called to alert the zoo staff that

a number of gorillas had entered the gorilla kitchen space to which only animal care staff should have access. The kitchen space is also designed to be a secondary gorilla containment area. The Calgary Zoo Emergency Response Team (ERT) was on the scene within minutes. The ERT immediately further secured the perimeter. On arrival of the ERT, the gorilla keeper secured a gorilla that remained in the kitchen. Unfortunately, a keeper was injured and is being treated for what appears to be a minor injury at this time. At no point was public at risk and none of the gorillas entered a non-secure space. The zoo’s emergency procedures were implemented successfully. The Rainforest Building was re-opened at 9:37am. -30-
