SEMANTIC TRANSLATION

ADAPTATION TRANSLATION FREE TRANSLATION COMMUNICATIVE TRANSLATION

Semantic Translation

A method of translation that has correct meaning, diction, grammar , context, and esthetics based on target language. However the message is not delivered well.

e.g Keep off the grass = Jauhi rumput itu Dilarang menginjak rumput He is a book worm = Dia (lk) adalah orang yang suka membaca Dia seorang kutu buku.

Adaptation Translation
A freest method of translation that is mainly used for translating song, poem, and drama:

- themes/ characters/ plots preserved

- SL culture converted to TL culture - text is rewritten

e.g.
Hey Jude, dont make it bad Take a sad song and make it better Remember to let her into your heart Then you can start to make it better
(Hey Jude -The Beatles)

Kasih, dimanakah
Mengapa kau

tinggalkan aku
Ingatlah-ingatlah kau padaku Janji setiamu tak kan kulupa

Free Translation
It reproduces the content without the form of the original. Usually it is a paraphrase much longer than the original, in order to make the message more understandable in TL.

e.g The flowers in the garden. (shunt up: phrase -> clause) = Bunga-bunga yang tumbuh di kebun Bunga-bunga di kebun

How do they live on what he makes ? (shunt down: clause -> phrase) = Bagaimana mereka dapat hidup dengan penghasilannya? Bagaimana mereka hidup dengan apa yang mereka hasilkan

Communicative Translation
A translation method that makes the exact contextual meaning of the original communicatively that both language and content are acceptable and comprehensible in TL, with message being delivered well.

e.g Beware of the dog = Awas anjing galak

Keep off the grass = Dilarang menginjak rumput
