Solons pleased over ICAOs lifting of PH’s SSC
Lawmakers expressed their elation over the decision of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) lifting the Significant Safety Concerns (SSC) it issued on the Philippines 5 years ago. They are hopeful that this will bring positive developments for the country’s tourism and aviation industry. Rep. Angelo Palmones (Party-list, Agham) said the country’s airlines have long been prepared for this opportunity. “Our country’s tourist sites have improved tremendously in the past five years. Flights in the United States of America and Europe will definitely increase arrivals,” said Palmones. Palmones stressed that protecting these tourists should, therefore, be the priority of the government. Rep. Marcelino Teodoro (1st District, Marikina City) said this is a positive development to the aviation industry as well as the tourism sector. “With the return of the international operations of airline companies, passengers can enjoy direct flights to European countries and the US,” said Teodoro. Teodoro said tourists can also better plan their trips ahead of time with the better options they have in terms of air travel. “This would also mean more convenient ways for foreign tourists to travel to the Philippines which will translate to revenue for the government,” Teodoro said. The SSC previously cited by the ICAO was requiring immediate corrective action to upgrade standards in aviation safety in the Philippines. (30) lvc
