Leon 1 - Final Consonants Part 1 Listen to the attached recording and follow along using the following text.

Space has been left in the recording for you to repeat after me. A. Final consonants in French are generally silent, with the exception of c, r, f and l all exemplified by the word CaReFuL. Borrowed English words: ballet, bouquet, buffet, Chevrolet, corps, coup, crochet, debris, debut, depot, filet, ricochet, bric-a-brac, Cadillac, chic, amateur, chauffeur, chef Pronounce the following French words, all of which have a silent final consonant:

Pronounce the following words, all of which end in a pronounced c, r, f or l.

The rule summarized by CaReFuL can also be applied to words of the following type, in which the r represents the final sound.

B. Exceptions The r is silent in the ending -er of verbs, nouns and adjectives of two or more syllables. ex: ajouter, attirer, donner, fonder, prier, l'escalier, le millier, le papier, le soulier, le chantier, premier, entier, dernier, lger, particulier BUT, cuiller or cuillre, the r is pronounced The c is usually silent in the ending -nc. ex: le banc, blanc, le tronc, il vainc BUT donc, the c is pronounced The endings -ct and -pt are pronounced somewhat randomly ex: exact, le contact; le respect, direct; prompt, le script North, South, East and West: est, ouest and sud are pronounced however the d of nord is silent. There are many more exceptions but they must be memorized individually. Part 2: Review Exercises - If you'd like, record yourself doing the Review Exercises and submit it for homework points.
