Coal is a shiny black rock, it is called a fossil fuel because they have been formed from organic remains

of prehistoric plants and animal.

1. Very large amounts of electricity can be generated in one place using coal, fairy cheaply. 2. A fossil fuel power station can be built anywhere.

1. The main draw back is pollution. 2. Mining coal can be difficult and dangerous. 3. Burning coal makes carbon dioxide than burning oil or gas. 4. Burning gas also produces sulphur dioxide a gas that contributes to acid rain.

1. The coal is crushed into dust and burnt. 2. It boils the water to make steam. 3. The steam turns the turbines and also turn the generators. 4. The generators turn to generate electricity.
