Pre-service Teacher Professional Development Plan for:

Aja Richter

Date: April 2, 2012

Directions: Your Professional Development Plan (PDP) serves as a guide toward continuous improvement during your teacher preparation program. List specific competencies, skills and dispositions you would like to improve on this form, using input from FEAP evaluation reviewed with your mentor teacher, feedback from your faculty steward, and other sources you deem reliable. What do I want to improve? (list specific improvement goals) How will I achieve this? (list specific steps you will take) When will I achieve this? Progress I have definitely made progress in this area, I dont feel as afraid as I used to. I mean in the beginning of Practicum 1 I was terrified to teach. I didnt even like doing small groups. Students petrified me. Now I feel extremely confident in small groups, however with whole class lessons I could still use more practice. I think I do well I just think I could be less nervous about it. I have gotten better here as well but still need improvement. I obviously prepare my lesson with time in mind but I am not so strict with time and it is taking longer than I set aside for the lesson to get them complete so I still need to work here.

I will be more confident when Im teaching in the classroom.

By practicing my lessons beforehand, and taking control in the classroom.

The end of Spring 2013

I will effectively use classroom time more appropriately.

I will prepare my lesson plans with a focus on the time each task will take. I will also set aside time for students conversation because now I allow the students to talk too much.

January 2013

What do I want to improve? (list specific improvement goals)

How will I achieve this? (list specific steps you will take) I will show interest and have explanations for my assignments. I will provide appropriate assessments and feedback. I will provide active engagement, control, and independence.

When will I achieve this?

Progress I think I have met the majority of this goal and what I believe I need improvement on is stated in my other goals. I believe I provide good feedback and actively engage the students. I think I am so engaged with them that is where my time issue lies which is why I need to work on it more.

Spring 2013

I will use a variety of effective techniques.

What do I want to improve? (list specific improvement goals)

I will be more confident when Im teaching in the classroom.

How will I achieve this? (list specific steps you will take) I will prepare my lesson plan thoroughly and input step by step instructions so I know exactly what I want to do. I will also be practicing my lessons beforehand, and taking control in the classroom. By practicing beforehand, I mean I will use my family as guinea pigs and make them sit

Progress By mastering my goal of time management I have also been able to feel more confident in my lessons. I have

How will I achieve this? (list specific steps you will take) through my lesson or at least the basics of my lesson to make sure everything is running smoothly and is in place to go correctly. Obviously some events are uncontrollable but for the most part I will have a set plan. I will prepare my lesson plans with a focus on the time each task will take. I will also set aside time for students conversation because now I still allow the students to talk too much. I will also try to find strategies where I can teach the lessons I want to teach in a specific amount of allotted time. I will also implement the use of a timer. I thought this was kind of a ridiculous thing to do but honestly I need to implement this tactic to ensure I stay on a timed schedule.

When will I achieve this?

Progress prepared my lessons thoroughly and by doing so I have been confident in the lessons I present. I have also I feel I have definitely mastered this goal. I have seen my mentor teacher wasting so much time I make sure to have step for step plans for the day so I dont waste any time and if I do say so myself I have more than exceeded my own expectations. I have definitely grown here. I have maintained close relationships with the student but have drawn clear boundaries. By doing this the students know they can come to me for anything but they also know they need to respect me and listen to me.

I will effectively use classroom time more appropriately when teaching lessons.

MidSpring 2013 (before full takeover)

I will be more assertive in the relationships I maintain with students.

When the students try to pull one over on me, I will be more assertive by addressing the issue immediately and applying appropriate consequence in the situation. I have an issue with letting the kids get away with things. I know it is because I like them so much, and because of this I need to be more assertive with the students. If I dont separate fun and firm I will have bad classroom management.

What do I want to improve? (list specific improvement goals)

I want to incorporate more ESE/ELL accommodations directly into instruction.

I want to make learning more fun.

How will I achieve this? (list specific steps you will take) I will use more pictures when teaching a new concept. Pictures give students visual understanding of the concepts. I will also use manipulatives to enforce concepts. Allowing students to use hands on manipulatives they will be able to better understand the concept because of its visualization. I understand sometimes learning is boring but I want to incorporate fun into every aspect of learning. I believe this is what makes kids WANT to learn and WANT to come to school. I will incorporate fun activities by creating lessons filled with hands on activities. I will utilize todays technology to network with other teachers about ways to incorporate fun into specific lessons.

What do I want to improve? (list specific improvement goals)

I will better utilize the materials and technology we are provided with.

How will I achieve this? (list specific steps you will take) During internship I have realized because the schools Ive worked at do not have smart boards and I have not learned much about them. However, we are planning on getting smart boards in the classrooms for next year so I plan to research the product and self teach myself what I can. I will also delve deep into the curriculum materials we are provided and teach myself to use the software and products that go with the lessons in order to incorporate the technology we have in the classroom. Technological advances are not going backwards so we need to use what we are provided so they become familiar to the students because they will grow up needing to know these materials.
