New Auckland Unitary Plan
and how it affects Milford

Penny Pirrit, Auckland Council’s Regional and Local Planning Manager, will address the meeting and answer questions.
Milford is currently classified as a small low-rise town centre offering consumer shopping services. The recommendations in the Unitary Plan discussion document would change this character substantially into a large town centre with building heights up to 8 storeys in the commercial area and a surrounding town-house / terraced housing zone of 3 to 6 storeys that extends out 500 metres to within one block of Milford Beach and to the bush edge surrounding Lake Pupuke. The Unitary Plan is a complex document and cannot be understood from just looking at the maps and must be read in conjunction with the planning rules attached to each zone. Since most of us do not have the time to invest of a degree in planning, this meeting is an essential opportunity for local people to hear about the plan and ask Council’s expert staff ….. ‘what could happen in Milford?’ Other questions to be answered are: the rationale and criteria used to include Milford in the ‘list of eleven’ large town centres; how increased traffic flows will be handled in the two lane streets that access Milford; what civic amenities Council plans to provide commensurate with a large town centre; and what are the anticipated infrastructure and stormwater pollution effects on the already severely degraded Wairau Creek environment and adjacent Milford Beach.
