Parent and Community Involvement
EFFECT ON SCHOOL/MY TEACHING
Low-income families are a consistent struggle to involve.
PTA and PoPS (Parents of Positive Students) are largely divided (both racially and economically) Parent involvement is rarely related to academics/achievement
Teachers are frustrated with lack of involvement, parents feel distrustful of school; poor communication as a result Very few events happen that reach EVERYONE/where everyone feels comfortable attending; lack of unity An “us vs. them” mentality; feeling that parents are out to “get” teachers
Teachers HAVE to be willing to step out of their comfort zone. We have to meet parents where they are. Present and help organize joint events with the PTA and PoPS, explaining the rationale; encourage PTA to move beyond just fundraising Parent University? More events outside of school hours where teachers rotate attendance; makes them more approachable
