Diodes are electrical components that only allows current to flow in one
direction:

In the flow direction, the resistance is so low that the current can flow
unhindered.

In the reverse direction, the resistance is so high that no current
flows.

If a diode is inserted into a AC circuit, the current can only flow in one
direction. The current is rectified.

The effect of a diode on an electrical circuit is comparable to the effect of
a non-return valve on a pneumatic circuit.
