Exper ience and
Exper t ise
The M etaldyne dam per is one ofthe m ost
efficientand reliable devices for
controlling resonanttorsionalvibration
conditions and therefore extending
engine life.
The M etaldyne design allow s the dam per
to operate ata high levelofefficiency over
a w ide range ofvibration frequencies.
M etaldyne has over 40 years ofdesign and
application experience oftorsionalvibration
dam pers for slow,m edium and high speed
dieselengines as w ellas other drive line
applications.
Const r uct ion Det ails
The M etaldyne dam per consists of:-
an inertia ring (A)
freely supported and located by bearings (B)
inside the casing (C )
the casing is sealed by the cover plate (D )
w hich can be either rolled or bolted
screw ed rem ovable filling plugs are fitted,
w here possible,to alldam pers above 470m m
to allow fluid sam ples to be taken (E)
Pr inciples of Oper at ion
The M etaldyne viscous dam per provides torsionalvibration dam ping by the shearing effectofa highly viscous silicone fluid
enclosed betw een the inner ring and outer casing. The dam per casing incorporates a m ounting flange w hich is rigidly
attached to the fore end ofthe crankshaftand houses an inertia ring w hich is freely supported and located by bearings
inside the casing.
U nder conditions ofzero torsionalvibration the dam per casing and inertia ring rotate atuniform velocity w ith the viscous
fluid transferring the torque betw een them .
As the engine speed changes to a pointw here torsionalvibration is presentthe crankshaftand dam per casing are subject
to torsionaloscillation superim posed on the m ean rotation.
Because ofits inertia effects the inner ring continues to rotate ata constantangular velocity creating an oscillating anti-
phase m ovem entbetw een itselfand the casing.
This relative m ovem entshears the film ofsilicone fluid, absorbing vibration energy w hich is dissipated as heatthrough the
externalsurfaces ofthe dam per casing.
D issipation ofheatis criticalto the efficientlife ofthe dam per.
Analysis Exper t ise
M etaldyne’s calculation program m es analyse the steady state torsionalvibration characteristics by the classicalresonant
analysis and by the m ore sophisticated Forced/D am ped torsionalvibration analysis technique. This approach assures the
custom er ofthe m ostcosteffective solution for their specific applications.
M etaldyne also pioneered the application oflarge (> 2 m etre) viscous torsionalvibration dam pers for large slow speed 2
and 4 stroke engines to controltorsionalvibrations in the propeller and interm ediate shafts on propulsion system s.
Design Skills
M etaldyne has a vastexperience in the application and design ofviscous torsionalvibration dam pers on high,m edium and
low speed dieselengines.
Further productapplications can include transm ission dam pers for m achine tools to preventgear chatter, vehicle (truck,
tram s and bus) transm ission dam pers to preventharshness
and noise w hich contribute to passenger discom fort, and diesel
engine cam shaftdam pers to lim itthe stresses in the cam shaft
due to its selfim posed torsionalvibration excitation.
C ustom ers are invited to contactM etaldyne w here data
requirem ents can be discussed and a detailed study ofthe
torsionalvibration characteristics ofthe system w illbe
conducted using the latestin-house com puter program m es.
This is a specific requirem entfor large 2 stroke engines.
Applied Technology
C ustom ers are assured ofoptim um solutions to their duty cycle
needs w ith M etaldyne’s applied technology.
•In-house torsionalvibration program m es
•Finite elem entdesign tools
•Expertise to confirm predictions by m easurem ent
•N VH evaluation tools
•C om prehensive rig testing
