Topic : Algebraic Expressions 1 Subtopic : Algebraic Expressions Learning Objective : By the end of the session, the students will be taught : a) Understand the concept of algebraic expressions Learning Outcomes : The students will be able to : i) Recognise algebraic expressions ii) Determine the number of terms in a given number of terms in a given algebraic expressions. iii) Simplfy algebraic expressions by combining the like terms. Activities : 1. An algebraic expressions is a combination of numbers, unknown and operational signs such as – or +. Ex : 2x + x is an expressions with two unknown. 2x = x + 5 is an expressions with three unknown 2. Algebraic expressions with like terms can be simplified by adding or subtracting the coeffcients of the unknown in algebraic terms. Ex : 3h + 4h = ( 3 + 4 ) h = 7h -2w + 7w = ( -2 + 7 ) w = 5w 3. An algebraic expression consisting of two unlike terms cannot be simplified. Ex : 3h + 4k 4. The operation sign lying before a term must be moved together with the term.
