1st Call for submissions 14 days to go!

! 22 March, 2013 - Today marks the two week countdown until the 5 April deadline for the African public to show the World Design Capital 2014 curators why their submission should be part of year-long programme next year. There has been much anticipation and excitement around the first wave of the submissions process but little is known about what the WDC2014 programme holds for Cape Town. The World Design Capital was initiated by Icsid (International Council of Societies of Industrial Design) and was first hosted in Torino (Turin), Italy in 2008. Turin worked as an experimental platform for developing and testing the WDC concept. The first WDC nominated after an official bidding process was Seoul in 2010. Seouls extensive design project concentrated specifically on demonstrating designs impact on the development on city infrastructure and improving its citizens everyday lives. For a taste of whats to come, heres a snapshot of the two previous WDC-designated city programmes: Turin (Italy) 340 events in 365 days which comprised of 137 exhibitions, 20 contests, 50 events, 22 lectures, 41 conferences, 10 congresses, 33 presentations, 3 fairs, and 24 workshops. Helsinki (Finland) - More than 250 projects were realised over 366 days, including six signature events. The programme signaled the most extensive programme of design events ever realised in Finland and was created for citizens and tourists alike, with over 100 special exhibitions and special development projects under the themes of "Changing City" and "New Solutions".
