Biology Objective: I can describe different types of genetic engineering

Homework 59 is due next class!

Activity 1: Cornell Notes

Biology Objective / Essential Question:
Main Ideas /
Questions:

Notes:
What do ALL organisms have in common? __________

1.

All organisms have __________, but the order of their _______________

_______________ are different
If all life is made up of the same stuff it should be easy to ___________
______________________ from different organisms
o All you have to do is cut out the DNA (gene) you want from one
organism, and insert it into a new organism. This process is called
_____________________________________.

2.

There are special tools that can be used to cut DNA called
__________________________________
__________________________________ is DNA
that has been created by genetic engineering
Once you cut out your DNA (gene), you can put it
inside of another organism.
o The new organism that gets this new DNA
Is now called a ________________________________
Stop-and-Jot:
1. What do you call an organism that foreign DNA inside of it?
2. What molecule do ALL living things have in common?
3. What do scientists use to cut DNA?
4. What do we call a molecule of DNA if it contains DNA from two or
more different sources?

Main Ideas /
Questions:
3.

Notes:
We can compare DNA using ____________________________________
o We can sort DNA by __________
o Scientists place _____________________________into ________
at one end of a gel
o Once the gel is loaded, you add ____________________.
The ______________ the DNA, the ______________ it moves!
But proteins are made at the _____________________

Stop-and-Jot:
Barney wanted to determine who licked his lollipop. Saliva was left behind
at the crime scene. Determine which of the following suspects licked
Barneys lollipop.

Activity 2: Time to Practice!

Name that technology! For each of the descriptions/ pictures on the left, decide what type of genetic
engineering technology is being used cloning, recombinant DNA, or gel electrophoresis. Some
answer choices will be used more than once!

1. TYPE OF TECHNOLOGY:

Dolly the Sheep is an exact genetic copy of her mom!

2. TYPE OF TECHNOLOGY:

In the laboratory, scientists remove the

gene for human growth hormone. They insert the
gene into the DNA of bacteria. This causes the
bacteria to produce human growth hormone. The
hormone is used to treat diseases in humans.

In the laboratory, scientists create a DNA

fingerprint to match the DNA sequence from blood
found at a crime scene to a suspects blood.

Bt protein is toxic to some insects that are pests of

crops. A particular bacterium produces Bt protein
naturally. Scientists remove the gene for
production of Bt protein from the bacteria and put
it into the DNA of corn. The corn now produces
the Bt protein and is resistant to the attacks of the
insect pests.

3. TYPE OF TECHNOLOGY:

5. TYPE OF TECHNOLOGY:

Activity 3: Time to Write!

Now that you have learned about 3 different genetic engineering technologies, choose one of the
following writing prompts to respond by writing two paragraphs:
Option 1: Cloning
Imagine you could make a clone of yourself
How could you make a clone of yourself?
What would be good about having a clone of yourself?
What would be bad about having a clone of yourself?
Option 2: Gene Transfer
Imagine you could have any gene inserted into your DNA
What gene would you have inserted (remember this gene must come from another living thing)?
How could this gene be inserted into you?
What would be good about having this gene in your body?
What might be bad about having this gene in your body?
Option 3: DNA Fingerprinting
Imagine you are a criminal investigator with three suspects for a recent murder. You have obtained
a small sample of hair and blood from the crime scene.
How could you create a DNA fingerprint for your suspects?
Your partner does not want to bother with DNA testing because it is expensive and takes too long. He
just wants to go by the evidence at the scene of the crime. He says, While we are in the lab doing
testing, the suspect could commit another murder. How do you feel about your partners opinion? Do
you agree? Disagree?
Brainstorm:
Use the space below to brainstorm your response. Write down words and ideas from your notes today
that you want to incorporate into your answer
