Reflecting on this week’s literary readings, as well as your own reading experiences, identify at least one major similarity and one major difference between the forms of the short story and the poem. How do the differences between these literary forms affect how you read and respond to them?
In your response, include an example of at least one poem from this week’s readings. Describe the connections between (a) the poem’s form and/or use of literary devices and your experience of the poem and (b) your reading experience (see key literary terms listed in our textbook – e.g., alliteration, rhyme, iambic pentameter, etc.). If you wish, you may also compare your experience of the poem to your experience reading a short story that shares with the poem a similar theme.
There are certain differences between short stories and poems and one of them is the richness of information and descriptions on
a visual image of how the story is going to unfold around the characters the author created. This is the reason why sometimes. One challenges in short story writing though for me is how to keep the story as clear as possible while at the same time keeping some information to make it more interesting like the character of the real killer (that we would only know at the end of the story or who she will choose to marry). the ways poems are interpreted are different from the author’s perception because the interpretation becomes subjective and personal. Poems are also written to tell a story but they are written in a different way. Narratives and short stories can also go a long way and it will be hard to place so much symbols because it might get . Most literature critics would say that there are more stories inside a 4 liner poem than a three pages narrative but again.short stories that allow readers to create their own image of the things that are being narrated to them. If an author can make such thrill on their narrative. then I can say he is a good author. less detail but more symbols that need more understanding and interpretation. This is very different with poems because poems are not meant to fully describe a woman or a food or a story in a detailed way. this depends on the capability of the reader to read and understand symbols and to interpret them. Short story writers or those who writes narratives make sure they have enough words to keep the readers busy creating an image in their mind. fewer words. This is what we call poetic meaning.
there are also similarities between . One story that I read was written by Stevie Smith and the story is entitled No Waving but Drowning. Despite some differences. Another book that I find interesting is the books written by Dr.misinterpreted while poems needs to go with the rhyming and it has rhythmic tone on it. The pain of being helpless was very apparent on the tone of the poem and the author kept on using words like “moaning” and “drowning” that for means pain and suffering. these words can simply affect the rhyming of the poem. It says on the story that the poem was a narrative of the friendship the author had with one of the characters and the poem was written after the friend passed away. The words used are good but there was a line in the poem that doesn’t rhyme like dead and said and sometimes when you are listening to some reciting the poem. One of the lines describes a situation where in the friend could have been dying already (he lay moaning) and it seems that the man was there watching his friend suffer but cannot do anything to help him ease the suffering. The story’s theme is sad because it talks about friendships and relationships and how one could have stopped something bad from happening but wasn’t able to. Seuss because of the way the words are constructed and rhymed together.
I guess the way the characters are being presented on both poems and short stories depends on the writer’s creativity as well as to how they can make it easier for the readers to identify which one is telling the story. the author or the narrator or the main character is always hiding and hard to identify within the story being told unlike in narratives where in the main character can tell the story on first or third person basis. For example. It seems like the main character did see the man drowning yet was unable to help him (“nobody heard him. This is very different from short stories because once a reader gets into the second or third page of a book. the reader would definitely have an idea of who is telling the story. the piece of Stevie Smith called Not Waving but Drowning has a character that is standing in a nearby location where the story is happening. Another similarity between a narrative and a poem is the use of .poems and narratives like they have a theme that they are following or a main story being told. In poems though. The introduction of poems and short stories though does one thing. Poems and narratives are the same in a way that they evoke emotions to those who read it or listen to it. The author might be a happy guy telling a happy love story or an active person describing a heist being planned or a thrill seeker telling the story of serial killers. the dead man”). they give an impression about the type of author you have because of the tone of the story or poem at the onset.
Lord Tennyson used the line “like yon oak” to express his idea about life meaning everyone should live thy life. Simile and metaphor are used to describe and compare things with other things to make reading more entertaining.this makes the listeners anticipates the next line with such intensity. Figurative language is of course a basic part of literary works.figurative languages and symbols to imply some meaning to their work. It makes them fill the void and silence with their own lines that might rhyme with the poem being read. For example. There are poem listeners who find it interesting when a poem being read rhymes all the time. The good thing about poem if you love reading them is there is a certain kind of excitement while waiting for the next line to be uttered. Simile and metaphor are the most common used figurative speech types because it is easier to understand by most readers and is easier to use by writers. While reading the poem of Lord Tennyson about the oak and how it was used to describe life. There are poem listeners who also finds excitement when the poem reader make a pause or makes some facial expression to make the poem reading more emotional. I was actually waiting for more lines that might rhyme with the word “old”. Using figurative languages is necessary to add meaning to a particular story although this is commonly used by poem writers because it adds to the mystery of what their poem would actually mean in reality. There are a lot of .
The feeling I got from knowing that I guess one of the words was great. . With narratives. This is something that writers of short stories have to worry.words that can rhyme with the word “old” that Tennyson can use so I guessed “gold” might be used as well and indeed it was. the use of words is more important as opposed to the use of carefully counted words in poems that sounds like together at the end. The thing is when trying to rhyme a poem. Personally. I know that rhyming is important in writing a poem because of the rhythmic tone that poems need to follow. make sure to be able to keep the meaning of the poem and that the poem should not be just a bunch of words that rhymes together but doesn’t mean anything. statements and lines and they are written with coherent plot without the need of each last word sounding together. I would say there are things that make poem writing easier or narrative writing easier but there are also things that makes each type of literary piece a real challenge to accomplish. Narratives are written in long words. I feel like I can write my own poem myself very soon.
