And her daughter was an aide to Gabrielle Gifford. Okay. And she just wanted to go up and thank Gabrielle Gifford for letting her be an aide up in Washington. Okay. And then, uh, all of a sudden, uh, her son said, I have a, oh, I had my shirt on, it says Infinity Airborne, 'cause I was a ...
Right. ... combat officer in Viet Nam. He says, you're a paratrooper? And I go, yeah. And so I was talking to her young son, 'cause he wanted to be a paratrooper. Okay. About how old is he? Oh, I don't know. He's 17 or 18. Okay. All right. Anyway, I heard pop, pop, pop, pop. And I thought, son of a bitch. All of a sudden a, s-, a guy came running, shooting and shot the lady in the back and knocked me down. And I got up and he was gonna reload the gun. The guy grabbed him, the gun fell on the ground, I grabbed the gun and the clip fell out, that he ... Okay. ... was reloading. And the lady grabbed it and I said, give me the clips, I'm gonna shoot the son of a bitch. And she goes, you can't do that. And I, the hell I can't, 'cause I would o' shot him. Uh huh (yes). That's how angry I was. And then, uh, and then the guy comes and ho-, hold him down and, and I just put the gun under my foot. I waited 'til everything calmed down. Okay. And the police came. Right. ... he, and the guy, I, I think it was the last round that came in and got me, because that's when he was trying to reload the weapon and the other guy grabbed him. Okay. Did you see if he had like another magazine he was getting ready to put in or anything like that? Yeah. It fell on the ground. Okay. The, the ... He was ... ... loaded one ... ... gonna reload ... ... did? ... it. Okay. And I, that's when I grabbed the gun. And, uh, the clip was kicked off by somebody. And this lady picked it up. I don't know who she was. Okay. She didn't get hurt. But I just said, give me the clip, and I'm gonna kill him, you know, I'll shoot him. Right. Uh, that's how pissed off I was. It was a combat reaction. Right. I'm not in trouble for that, am I? Da-, did, uh, what did you do with the gun? Did you give it to an officer over there? Yeah. I kept ... Okay. ... I kept it under my foot until the Sheriff's Department arrived. Okay. And then, um, uh, the lady Sheriff came up. Uh, I don't ... Okay. ... know her name. But she took ma-, the gun. And then, um, uh, she took my driver's license and took ... Okay.

Um, do you have anybody else at home or someone that's ... Well, my ... ... on their ... ... wife is ... ... way? ... coming. Uh ... Okay. ... and my ... Okay. ... daughter-in-law to pick me up. Okay. As soon as they get done what they're gonna do on my leg. How bad is it? Just a scratch? Uh, well, it's, gouged it out pretty good. Yeah. So the doctor is deciding whether they're gonna put stitches in there or just kind o' let it heal it up ... Be ... ... itself. ... stitching it up or whatever there. At first they thought the bullet was in there. And then they took X-rays and the bullet just actually, probably just glazed it really bad. Okay. But you didn't see the guy walking up, you just heard the, the gunshots? Well, I, all I saw was pop, pop, pop. And then I saw the guy running.

A. and reload, and the guy jumped him and I got the gun. Could you tell what ... I. ... kind o' gun it was or what kind o' magazine? Uh, it was a long clip. Like ... Okay. ... 10 or 12. Sticking out the bottom of the gun? Well, no, it was on the ground, the clip. Okay. I don't know what happened to the empty clip.
Okay. All I saw was the loaded clip and that's when the lady, somebody kicked it. I don't know who. She grabbed it and I tried to get it from her because I think that if I would o' gotten the clip I would o' shot the son of a bitch. Did, uh, did you see who else got shot or anything? Oh, yeah. A lot of people up there laying on the ground, man. Like ... Okay. ... the guy, the guy that actually grabbed him, he got grazed in the back of his skull. Okay. Took a shot across. But it didn't penetrate, just ... Just ... ... just ... ... just ... ... grazed ... ... grazed ... ... him. ... him. Yeah. And he was still vertical. Okay. Uh, that's the guy that tackled him? Yeah. All right. Uh, were you, you weren't there with anybody else you knew or anything like that?

I just, I just wanted to go talk to Gabrielle Gifford, 'cause I like her. Yeah. Uh, from my hand, my fingerprints are on that gun. That's okay. I wouldn't, um, how did you hear about the event? Well, I got a telephone call yesterday, a recording about the event. Then I forgot what time it was, so I called her office up on Swan.
Uh huh (yes). To, and I, there was nobody there, just the answering service. So I just hung up and then I, I got on the computer. Okay. And that's, so that's __________________. So you got like one of those automated phone calls? Yeah. Okay. Yeah. But I had called her office this morning. Yeah. Just to find out what time it was, to make sure it was gonna be at the Safeway. I couldn't believe she was gonna have it out in the open. Yeah. You know, I ________________________, you know. Yeah. So you had to sign up a list and then there was a line of people standing there? Oh, yeah. Okay. And then you kind o' got a one on one with her. Were there other people sitting up there with her? Yeah. I never got a chance to get up there. Right. Like I was way back in the line.

And it was just a quick pop, pop, pop, pop. All right. Uh, he emptied the magazine, is what he ... Right. ... did. And he took it out. Dropped that one and was reaching for another one. Yeah. Yeah. That's when he dropped the gun. Yeah. All right. As long as I'm not in any trouble, uh. No, you're not in any trouble. You got shot. I mean, you didn't, so. All right. Um. And I think I would o' shot that son of a bitch. I really would. Well. It's just a combat reaction. And ... Well, you were ... ... I spent ... ... mad at him. ... I spent ... I understand ... ... three tours ... ... that. ... in Viet Nam. Yeah. You know. And I got wounded in Viet Nam. So. All right. It's just a normal reaction, I think, from anger with, you know, been over at Nam, so.
