Contacts: Chuck Tombarge, University News Service, tombarge@umn.edu, (612) 625-8510 MINNEAPOLIS / ST. PAUL (03/25/2013) —University of Minnesota President Eric Kaler issued the following statement today in regards to Tubby Smith being relieved of his duties as head men's basketball coach: "I wish to thank Tubby Smith for his hard work and commitment during his six seasons as head coach of the men’s basketball program at the University of Minnesota. He and his staff produced some thrilling victories for Gopher fans and were dedicated to the on- and off-court success of our studentathletes. "However, I agree with and support Norwood Teague’s decision to take the program in a new direction. The Gopher men’s basketball program can and should attain a high level of consistent Big Ten and national success. This past season fell short of our expectations for this coaching staff. Now is a logical time to begin this transition to ensure the continued success of our student-athletes. "I have full faith in Norwood and his staff to lead a successful search for the new head men’s basketball coach. I expect this individual to manage and build a strong program that operates with the highest integrity, is dedicated to the overall development of the student-athlete and is a proud representative of the University of Minnesota."
