One way the black box slmbolizes tradition is the box is getting out dated, much like the

tradition. The text says, "The black box grew shabbier each year; by now it was no longer
completely black but splintered badly along one side to show the original wood color, and in the
same places faded or stained" (259). This shows that not only the box is getting beaten,

Another way the black box symbolizes tradition is when Mr. Summers came into the
town carrying the box and everyone was frightened. The text says, "When he arrived in the
square, carrying the black wooden box, there was a murmur of conversation among the villagers"

(259). This shows that everyone is anxious and getting butterflies in their stomachs by just
looking at the black box, so this tradition should be overlooked because it isn't making the

town's people happy or excited.

The message Shirley Jackson is trying to teach us in "The Lottery" is to think twice about
our repetitive beliefs or traditions because they are not always correct. I can relate this message

to a situation I had. For example, every morning in the beginning of 7tr grade I wouldn't eat
breakfast. Then one day I went to field hockey practice and was feeling dizzy. My friend called

my mom to bring me food because I started to see black dots. My mom immediately left from

work and brought me a'ofeast" of food. From that day on I overlooked my repetitive "tradition"
of not eating breakfast. Now, I never miss breakfast. I believe that the people in the town of "The

Lottery" should overlook their traditions and beliefs because they are not always right.
