EARLY CHRISTIAN LITURGICAL OBJECTS AND ITEMS
OF ECCLESIASTICAL FURNITURE IN SOUTHERN SERBIA
The early Christian objects which were used in liturgical rites (liturgical vessels, pro
cessional crosses, censers, ampullae etc.) or constituted part of a churchs furnishings (chan
deliers, lamps) clearly indicate the importance of the region which today is covered by south
ern and south-eastern Serbia, and which, in the late Roman and early Byzantine period, was
part of the provinces of Dacia Mediterranea and Dardania. These products either originated
from various parts of the Empire and reached the central Balkans as imports, or were manu
factured in local workshops and on occasion exhibit specific autochthonous characteristics.
It is noticeable that the items, whether they be cult objects or parts of church furniture,
are mostly grouped around the urban centres, as is also the case in other parts of the prefec
ture of Illyricum. The reason for this lies in the fact that the urban areas were the centres from
which Christianity spread to neighbouring rural areas of the Balkan peninsular, and that the
first ecclesiastical buildings were erected in this urban context.
The relative abundance of such objects indicates the already advanced degree of
Christianization, not only in present-day southern Serbia, but over the whole central Balkans
from the 4th to the early 7th century.
