Unit Plan Volume and Surface Area

Lesson 1*
Introduction to 3D Figures Day 1 - Students watch commercial and note 3D shapes that they see - Exploring and naming 3D shapes BGFL Shapes - Faces, edges, vertices explained guided notes on Smartboard - Students discover Eulers formula - 3D shapes scavenger hunt with iPads - Students create folder on Dropbox and upload images

Lesson 2
Drawing 3D Figures Day 2 - Guided notes on Smartboard of isometric and orthogonal drawings - Small groups move to different stations with 3D figures out of blocks, drawing front, side, and top views - Students build 3D figure with given orthogonal views - Students complete exploration with interactive isometric drawing tool

Lesson 3
Volume of Prisms and Cylinders (2 days) Day 3 - Review terms/shapes - Intro to volume with exploration activity - Students work in pairs to discover formulas for volume using worksheet with shapes, dimensions, and volume - Students test formulas on 3 items Day 4 - Review correct volume formulas - Discover how volume changes when dimensions change Interactivate activity and worksheet

Lesson 4
Volume of Pyramids and Cones Day 5 - Discover relationship between pyramid and rectangular prism and between cone and cylinder by comparing volumes - Review formulas for volume of pyramids and cones practice on SmartBoard - Choose a candy type and find the volume of one of the candies

Lesson 5
Surface Area (2 days) Day 6 and Day 7 - SmartBoard introduction to Surface Area, showing manipulatives - Use dynamic paper to create nets for prisms (day 6) and pyramids, cylinders, and cones (day 7) - Print nets and write basic information of each solid on each net including formulas, total volume, total surface area

Lesson 6
Surface Area and Volume Review Day 8 - SmartBoard game to practice solving surface area and volume of different 3D shapes - Quiz on determining surface area and volume of 3D shapes Part A Introduction to Piata Project Day 9 - Show students a fully made piata, discuss volume and surface area - Create student groups - Hand out project instructions, rubric, and proposal sheet - Students prepare a proposal for piata including shape, size, materials and plan

Lesson 7*
Part B Model of Piata Shape on Geometry Pad and 3DTin
Students have been introduced to both programs in their art class.

Lesson 8
Part C Piata Creation (2 days) and Finalizing Presentation (1 day) Days 12, 13, and 14 - Work in group creating piata - Keep track of materials used on provided worksheet - Document any problems encountered in online journal - Determine surface area and volume of piata - Estimate number of candies that will fit in piata based on volume - Fill piata and note total number of candies - Prepare presentation for piata Piata Showcase (3 days) Days 15, 16, and 17 - Each group presents its piata, describing its structure, calculated volume and surface area, any struggles, and the candy it is filled with - Students guess total of candies based on volume - Student who guesses closest can break piata (if group allows) - Closing discussion

Day 10 - Students use the Geometry Pad app on the iPad to create a front or side 2d proportional view of their piata shape Day 11 - Students use 3DTin, a web-based 3D modeling program, to design a virtual model of their piata shape - Models are submitted for approval and then printed using MakerBot
