MiLB OPENING DAY…the Mariners four full-season minor league affiliates opened the 2013 season
yesterday going 2-2 (wins by Tacoma & Clinton)…here are some highlights from yesterday’s games:

CF Endy Chavez went 4x6, 2 R, 2B batting leadoff for Tacoma.
LHP Danny Hultzen earned the win allowing 1 run in 6.0 IP (3 H, 8 K) for Tacoma.
RHP Taijuan Walker struck out 8 in 5.0 innings in Jackson’s 5-3 loss at Jacksonville.
RF Kevin Rivers went 4x5, 3 R, 2 2B, HR, 4 RBI in High Desert’s 10-9 loss at Lancaster.
RH Stephen Landazuri (4.0 IP, 4 K), LH Jeremy Dobbs (2.0 IP, 3 K), RH Dominic Leone (2.0 IP, 5 K)
and RH Grady Wood (1.0 IP, 1 K) combined to record 13 strikeouts in Clinton’s 4-2 win at Burlington.

THE KING & KUMA…the Mariners 1-2 punch of starting pitchers Felix Hernandez and Hisashi
Iwakuma, have combined to go 2-0, 0.66 ERA (1 ER, 13.2 IP) with 1 walk and 15 strikeouts.
HE’S PRETTY GOOD…Felix Hernandez recorded his 99th career victory Monday night with his
4th career Opening Day win (in 6 OD starts)…is the only pitcher in club history to record an Opening
Day start of at least 7.0 shutout innings, and he has done it twice (also: 4/2/07 vs. OAK, 8.0 ShO
IP)…Felix is scheduled to make his last start as a 26-year-old tomorrow (turns 27 April 8), and will
be going for career win #100 and strikeouts #1,500 (currently 1,495).
EDGAR PCL HALL OF FAME…Mariners Hall of Famer Edgar Martinez will be inducted into the
Pacific Coast League Hall of Fame as the three members of the Class of 2013, joining Sandy Alomar
Jr. and George Metkovich…over his four-year career in the PCL (1985, 87-89), all with the Calgary
Cannons, Martinez posted a .344 batting average (327x950) and won the PCL batting title in 1988.
YOU ALREADY KNOW…that Michael Morse has homered in three consecutive games…BUT
DID YOU KNOW?…that his 4 HR in the Mariners first four games is tied for the most in club
history with Ken Griffey Jr. in 1997?…Griffey homered in four of Seattle’s first five games (for 5 HR)
during his 1997 MVP season…prior to Morse’s current streak, the last Major Leaguer with 4 HR in
a team’s first four games was Nelson Cruz (TEX) in 2011…looking ahead to tonight, the last Major
Leaguer with 5 HR in a team’s first 5 games was Chris Shelton with the Tigers in 2006.

SPRING TRAINING REVIEW…went 1-1 with a 6.52
ERA (14 ER, 19.1 IP) in 5 official Spring Training appearances (3 GS)…recorded the loss in final ST start

2012 IN REVIEW…went 11-11 with a 4.43 ERA (75 ER, 152.1 IP in 26
starts with Seattle in 2012…posted career-highs in nearly every pitching category, including wins (11), starts (26), innings pitched (152.1)
and strikeouts (67)…issued only 24 walks in 152.1 innings, 2nd-fewest in the Majors by any pitcher with at least 150.0 innings (Colon,
23)…became just the 9th pitcher in club history, and first since Felix
Herandez (12 in 2006) to post double-digits in wins in either the first
of second season of a ML career…went 4-0 with a 2.61 ERA (11 ER,
38.0 IP) in 6 starts with AAA Tacoma.

GOOD STRETCH…since July 17, 2012 (when he was recalled from Tacoma) Blake is 8-5, 3.40 (34 ER, 90.0 IP) in 14 starts.
GOOD GAME…his final game last season was a beauty, as Beavan
tossed 8.0 shutout innings vs the LA Angels in Safeco Field.
THANKS FOR NOTHING…Beavan led the American League (2nd in
MLB) with 10 starts last season in which he did not allowed a walk…
San Diego’s Clayton Richard had 11 such games.
MAKE ‘EM EARN IT…allowed an unearned run in his start Sept. 28 at
OAK, the only unearned run he’s allowed in his career…did not allow
an unearned run in his first 39 GS (236.2 IP, 118 R, 118 ER) prior to
Sept 28…has allowed 76 runs in his career, 75 earned runs.

ironically, Beavan (Irving High School) and Humber (Carthage High School) had the same high school baseball coach, Jay Malone.
