EFiS EDI Finance Service AG moves to Linux on IBM System z
Supporting mission-critical applications and services
EFiS EDI Finance Service AG, an affiliate of ABK-Systeme GmbH, is a Software as a Service (SaaS) application provider for banking, financial institutions and corporations. The company offers a SaaS computing-services model that allows its customers within the financial industry to conduct its transactions without hosting an application or any associated hardware in-house. The company provides a multi-client, -currency and -language finance data processing platform for all types of payments in all types of formats. The application complies with recent developments in security requirements introduced since the adoption of the Euro currency, including the formation of a Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) and supports all major clearing systems and automatic clearing houses (ACH) and real-time gross settlement (RTGS) on one physical platform. This enables its clients to take advantage of the agility provided by leveraging the latest industry-related technological trends, minus the administrative headaches. Based in Dreieich, Germany, the group currently employs around 60 people and generates annual sales of approximately €8 million.

Overview
Business challenge
EFiS EDI Finance Service AG had been using a collection of x86-based servers running Linux software to support its mission-critical applications and processes. However, the servers were not meeting the company’s performance or scalability requirements.

Solution
PROFI Engineering Systems AG helped the company migrate its mission-critical applications from x86-based servers onto a single IBM Enterprise Linux Server (ELS) – an IBM System z9 Business Class platform running Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for System z. The company then saw an opportunity to expand its IBM and Linux investments and improve the company’s overall services by updating its data center and installing a new ELS, based on IBM System z10 Business Class hardware.

The challenge
EFiS EDI Finance Service AG provides its clients with SaaS services that deal with sensitive financial data. As a result, the company has always been committed to high performing and secure technology to help it comply with strict data protection laws. Additionally EFiS EDI Finance Service AG processes large volumes of transactions each day and requires technology flexible enough to support fluctuating capacity demands. Recently, EFiS EDI Finance Service AG had been using a collection of x86-based servers running Linux software to support its mission-critical applications and processes. However, the servers were not fully meeting

Business Benefits

EFiS EDI Finance Service AG successfully consolidated its environment while deploying hundreds of Linux instances to support its performance requirements. By retiring unnecessary and underperforming hardware, the company was able to double processing speeds and optimize its data center. The implementation of the SUSE Linux Enterprise Server software and System z technology enabled the company to optimize its fully realized disaster recovery plan.

the company’s performance or scalability requirements. EFiS EDI Finance Service AG needed to implement new server solutions capable of optimizing its Linux-based environment while minimizing risks and lowering costs. Additionally, the new solution needed to improve disaster recovery capabilities to support the uninterrupted operation of its 24/7 online banking system. EFiS EDI Finance Service AG is also strongly committed to green technologies and has, for instance, designed and implemented an innovative water-cooled air cooler system to take advantage of the old apple cider tanks in the cellar underneath its data center. This green philosophy has led to the company continuously seeking ways to reduce its carbon footprint, which played a major role when it came to selecting a new platform.

The solution
EFiS chose to implement its new Linux platform on IBM System z technology. Before the implementation, IBM Business Partner PROFI Engineering Systems AG helped EFiS EDI Finance Service AG rigorously test the solution to ensure that it would deliver the kind of performance improvements that would make the migration worthwhile. Then, PROFI Engineering Systems AG helped the company migrate its mission-critical applications from pre-existing x86-based servers onto an IBM Enterprise Linux Server (ELS) – a single IBM System z9 Business Class (z9 BC) platform running the Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for System z operating system. While the IBM System z9 BC platform satisfied the company’s performance and energy requirements, EFiS EDI Finance Service AG saw an opportunity to expand its IBM and Linux investments and improve the company’s overall services. The company updated its data center by installing a new ELS – an IBM System z10 Business Class (z10 BC) server as its new disaster recovery platform. The IBM System z10 BC server uses the powerful IBM Integrated Facility for Linux (IFL) processors to provide a highly reliable and available virtualized environment for its Linux-based workloads. Deploying the IBM System z9 had already increased processing speeds significantly; even so, the tests showed that the introduction of the new ELS could double the existing performance levels.

The benefits
Thanks to the IBM System z platforms, virtualization technologies and the SUSE Linux Enterprise Server for System z operating system, EFiS EDI Finance Service AG successfully consolidated its environment while deploying hundreds of Linux instances to support its performance requirements. By retiring unnecessary and underperforming hardware the company was able to double processing speeds and optimize its data center. Additionally, the implementation of the SUSE Linux Enterprise

Server software and IBM System z technology enabled the company to optimize its fully realized disaster recovery plan. The consolidated IBM System z9 BC and IBM System z10 BC servers successfully streamlined the data center to optimize maintenance and management processes and effectively reduce costs. The virtualized IBM System z environment offers much higher than average processor utilization levels, so a single IFL processor is able to handle workloads equivalent to a large number of x86 servers. This is particularly significant for software which is licensed on a per-processor basis, as is the case for many of the company’s business-critical applications. As a result, the company was able to enjoy instant savings by migrating these applications to the SUSE Linux Enterprise Server solution. The virtualization capabilities of the ELS are also important to EFiS EDI Finance Service AG in terms of scalability and flexibility. IT staff are able to rapidly provision a new virtualized Linux environment as required to effectively increase business agility. They can also easily adjust the allocation of processors and memory, ensuring optimal use of resources. As well as saving on electricity costs, the energy efficiency of the ELS makes it the ideal solution to help EFiS EDI Finance Service AG meet its environmentally friendly IT goals. A significant reduction in its carbon footprint has minimized the impact the company makes on the environment. Running the Linux operating system has provided a security-rich environment to increase business resiliency. The finance industry has very high demands for data safety and data integrity, hence high security presents a key selling point to the company’s clients and also helps to comply with strict data protection laws. Ultimately, the IBM System z servers and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server operating system enabled EFiS EDI Finance Service AG to keep costs low and increase flexibility, while boosting its green computing credentials. By combining the traditional reliability and availability of IBM System z technology with the openness and flexibility of Linux software, the company gains the best of both worlds.
