By KRISTINA SCALA
The Voorhees Sun
Recently, the state released the
2011-2012 school reports using the
new rating system. Eastern Re-
gional High School is ranked high
in college and career readiness,
and in academic performance,
and average in graduation and
post-secondary performance
when compared to the state.
However, the report shows the
school significantly lags in com-
parison to peer schools in both ac-
ademic performance and gradua-
tion and post-secondary readi-
ness. It is ranked average in col-
lege and career readiness.
According to Patricia Den-
holm, director of curriculum, in-
struction and professional devel-
opment, the states rankings were
changed to focus on three cate-
gories. The new reports evaluate
schools in academic achievement,
which rates on standardized test-

Route 73, the medical mile,
continues to grow
By KRISTINA SCALA
The Voorhees Sun
Route 73 in Voorhees is de-
scribed as the medical mile.
Virtua Hospital, a $600 million
project, opened its doors in May
2011, creating hundreds of jobs,
generating revenue and improv-
ing the sewer infrastructure.
But Virtua and other medical
facilities are not the only inhabi-
tants of the Route 73 corridor.
According to Mayor Michael
Mignogna, the campus has
turned into an economic mag-
net, attracting businesses to
Route 73 and other parts of
Voorhees.
Mignogna said the sewer im-
provements also played a large
role.
Economic Development Man-
ager Michael Marchitto said Vir-
tua attracted more business to
Voorhees, and the business at-
mosphere on Route 73 is begin-
ning to grow.
The corridor has really devel-
oped over a 10-year period, he
said, adding plans for Route 73
were carefully constructed.
NJDOT has improved the road
since the hospital moved to Route
73.
Traffic signals and lanes were
modified, a jug handle was con-
structed, left turn lanes were cre-
ated at Dutch Town and Kresson
roads and more, according to
NJDOT spokesman Tim Greeley.
Greeley said the project was es-
timated to cost $6.5 million and
was completed last fall.
A Route 73 corridor team, an
organization created to help beau-
tify the roadway, planned walk-
ways, paths, landscaping and
more to help attract people to the
area.

Virtua owns property from
Dutchtown Road to Bowman
Drive.
Virtua pieced the lots together
very methodically in order to put
this project in play, Marchitto
said.
Adding to the medical mile,
the hospital formed a partnership
with the Childrens Hospital of
Philadelphia, bringing a chil-
drens hospital to Voorhees, as
well as opening a Health and
Wellness Center.
Brandywine Senior Living Fa-
cility, a $28 million project, is
under construction next to Vir-
tua, Powerback Rehab Facility re-
cently opened, and South Jersey
Radiology is preparing to open at
the former American Fitness site,
Mignogna said.
They are there to support a lot
of the people that go into the hos-
pital and come out for rehabilita-
tion, Marchitto said. It works
hand-in-hand, how business is
spurred by other business.
Other businesses such as Veri-
zon, which recently opened a
4,000-square-foot facility in Coop-
er Plaza, Jakes Way Back Burg-
ers and Celebrity Tanz are a few
other businesses recently added
to the area.
In March, there was a ground-
breaking for a 100-room Hampton
Inn. The hotel will bring a ban-
quet hall, restaurant and liquor
license, adding to the townships
revenues.
Currently on the Route 73 cor-
ridor is Raymour & Flanigan,
Lowes, Kohls, BJs Wholesale
Club, Marshalls, Rite Aid and
more.
Two pad sites were built in the
Marshalls parking lot, aiding in

be filled with ancillary business-
es, such as coffee shops, conven-
ience stores, dry cleaners, ham-
burger places and more.
Americas Best Contacts and
Eye Glasses is fitting into a build-
ing right now, Marchitto said.
With the expansion of Route
73, there are accessory businesses
that need to aid the people who
work there, the people who go
there. I think its really starting to
become a natural progression,
Marchitto said.
Shopping plazas such as Eagle
Plaza and Copper Plaza are filling
out and the old Rite Aid location
would hopefully be backfilled,
or occupied, by another business,
Marchitto said.
The motto Live Voorhees,
Shop Voorhees goes for the
Route 73 corridor as well as the
interior of the township.
He said Restaurant Row is
shaping out with six restaurants
and is still growing.
New and successful businesses
add to the townships revenue,
but also open employment oppor-
tunities. Marchitto said more
businesses mean more employ-
ment for students and residents
looking for part-time work.
The VBA, EDC and the
Voorhees Retention and Expan-
sion Task Force are working on
economic and job growth in
Voorhees.
In 2012, approximately 88 new
businesses opened in Voorhees,
creating approximately 890 new
jobs.
Currently, Voorhees has be-
tween 1,400 and 1,500 businesses,
and the VBA membership is
growing, he said.
The township is also looking at
becoming certified under the In-

As the weather heats up, so do the activi-
ties at the Voorhees Town Center as a 10-
day carnival opens on April 25 and the
Farmers Market begins on May 11.
From April 25 through May 5, the Town
Center will host a carnival to benefit the
NephCure Foundation, a leading world-
wide organization that supports research
for the cure of the kidney disease focal seg-
mental glomerulosclerosis. The disease is
a malfunctioning kidney disorder and ap-
pears most often during childhood.
Ron Cohen, vice president of The
NephCure Foundation, approached the
Voorhees Town Center several months ago
and asked them to host a carnival to bene-
fit his grandson, Benjamin, who was diag-
nosed with FSGS at the age of 13 months.
Benjamin is now 11 and continues to fight
the battle. Ron and his wife, Fran, founded
the Foundation in
the hopes of find-
ing a cure for the
disease. Anyone
can contract FSGS,
and it is one of the
most common caus-
es of Chronic Kid-
ney Disease and is
responsible for ap-
proximately 12 per-
cent of kidney fail-
ure in adults and 20
percent in children.
Approximately
5,400 people are di-
agnosed with
FSGS annually
and there are cur-
rently no approved
drugs for treatment.
The carnival will be held on weekdays
from 5 to 11 p.m. and weekends from noon
until 11 p.m.
Tickets are $1 each or 50 for $40. Wrist-
bands are available Monday to Friday for
$25 or $30 for Saturday and Sunday. For

MAYORS MESSAGE
W
hat can be said about the
Boston Marathon tragedy
that hasnt been said al-
ready? Its another senseless act of
anonymous violence.
Add the Boston Marathon to the list
with Newtown, Conn.; Columbine,
Colo.; Atlanta, Ga.; Waco, Texas; Okla-
homa City, Okla.; New York, N.Y.; and
countless others.
The person, or people, who commit-
ted this act is a terrorist make no
mistake about that. As of press time
(April 19), one person believed to be a
suspect was shot dead by authorities in
Boston, while another was still on the
loose. These people prayed on innocent
lives in a vulnerable situation.
Three victims were killed, including
an 8-year-old boy, and almost 200 others
were wounded by two bombs that were
placed in bags near the Marathons fin-
ish line.
The victims of the tragedy stretch
far beyond the city of Boston, the state
of Massachusetts, and the region of
New England. Runners travel from
near and far to participate in the
worlds oldest annual marathon, which
began in 1897, and family and friends
travel with them to watch them finish.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to
everyone affected.
When will these acts of mass vio-
lence end? Its scary to think the more
appropriate word to use is if and not
when.
But we need to continue living our
lives. We cant live in fear, as difficult
as that may be. We cant stop attending
our sons and daughters Little League
games, our parents marathon runs,
our favorite professional or college
sports teams big games, our favorite
bands concerts just because violence
may happen where large groups of
people congregate.
It may happen thats an unfortu-
nate reality of our lives. We can height-
en and increase security (which we
should do), but we ultimately cant pre-
vent every act of terror.
Thats a sad reality.
What we can do is continue to live
our lives like normal, remembering
the victims and helping their families
along the way. This is what the terror-
ist doesnt want, and this what we
should give him, her or them.

Metro Division takes

to the streets
By Freeholder Director Louis Cappelli, Jr.
A historic event
for Camden
County occurred
on April 8, 2013. On
that day, the offi-
cers of the Camden
County Police De-
partment Metro Di-
vision went on
patrol for the first
time, and they have
had a significant
presence ever since.
When the officers of the Metro
Division arrived on the streets
and in the neighborhoods, the im-
pact of this aggressive move
against crime was immediately
visible. Residents and business
owners gave the officers a warm
welcome and thanked them for
looking out for their concerns.
These sworn police officers will
stabilize Camden City and make
Camden County a safer place to
live for all residents. As I have said
in the past, the status quo in our
county seat is unacceptable and
the level of violence cannot con-
tinue over the nine square miles
of the city.
When the department is fully
operational on April 30, the Cam-
den County Police Departments
Metro Division will put hundreds
of officers on the street. Dispatch-
ing more Boots on the Ground
will enable police to proactively
patrol neighborhoods, cultivate re-
lationships with residents and
other essential community stake-
holders to prevent crime rather
than reacting to crime.
Each day, more than 30 Metro
Division Officers are patrolling
Camden Citys streets on foot as
they receive eight weeks of field
training alongside Supervisory
Training Officers. The field train-
ing is being given by former mem-
bers of the Camden City Police
Department now employed in the
Metro Division. The practical field
training follows two weeks of
agency orientation
where the officers
covered areas in-
cluding policies,
procedures and
community polic-
ing. The training
officers are famil-
iar with the city
and are sharing
their first hand ex-
perience and
knowledge with their colleagues.
Starting this week 70 more
sworn officers will be starting field
training and joining the ranks of
the Camden County Police Depart-
ment. These new members of the
force will start working in new
neighborhoods and continue to
build on the success of the first
phase of officers that have been de-
ployed. By April 30, the Metro Di-
vision will be staffed at more than
376 sworn officers and civilians
working to make Camden County
a safer place to live, work and raise
a family.
All costs of the Metro Divi-
sions police services will be paid
for by the City of Camden with
local property tax revenue and the
State of New Jersey through mu-
nicipal aid.
This police presence, along with
a new model of policing that in-
creases services and safety at re-
duced costs, is imperative to the
war on crime. The rise in criminal
activity, much of it drug-related,
has placed far too many people in
danger and we will not tolerate
it any longer.
If you have any questions about
the Camden County Police De-
partment, please call my office at
(856) 225-5451, or email me at
louc@camdencounty.com. For
more information on the depart-
ment you can also go to www.cam-
dencountypd.org, or on Twitter at

book, at www.facebook.com/Cam-
denCountyPD.

Resident encourages
more attendance
On April 10, I attended a meet-
ing of the Voorhees Special Edu-
cation Parent Advisory Commit-
tee. The group was focused, artic-
ulate, knowledgeable and helpful.
Dr. Hill, director of special servic-
es, encouraged full participation.
Unfortunately, fewer than eight
parents attended. I strongly urge
more parents of children in spe-
cial education to attend these
meetings. By attending, listening
and participating, they can learn
a lot, develop important relation-
ships, and influence their chil-
drens development by helping to
shape the special education pro-
grams in Voorhees.

Although businesses are pop-
ping up in Voorhees and on Route
73, Marchitto said empty store-
fronts bring concern to many res-
idents.
He said when it comes to loca-
tions such as the old Bally Total
Fitness on White Horse Road, the
gym was bought out by LA Fit-
ness, consolidated and moved to
Somerdale.
The owner of the building
still has a lease and LA Fitness
does not want that lease to be re-
linquished because they dont
want any other gym moving in,
he said, adding the township is
feverishly trying to get empty
properties such as this one filled,
but if they are paying the lease,
there is not much they can do.
As for Route 73, Marchitto said
when it is filled with businesses,
he would do a happy dance.
With outside forces constantly
affecting the business world, its
difficult to keep properties filled
long term.
He said the Business Retention
Task Force and township eco-
nomic development teams will
continue to work on economic de-
velopment long after all proper-
ties on Route 73 are filled.
We dont leave any stone un-
turned, Marchitto said.

dents who participate in the
PSAT and SAT, percentage of stu-
dents who score above a 1550, per-
centage of students taking AP
tests, and the percentage of stu-
dents who score a three or
greater; and graduation and post-
secondary, which are calculated
as the graduation rate and the
school dropout rate.
Denholm said schools are
ranked with the state and peer
schools.
Peer schools have a similar de-
mographic calculated by percent-
age of free and reduced lunch,
limited English proficient stu-
dents and for students with dis-
abilities.
Eastern is peer ranked with 31
demographically similar schools,
most of which are located in
North Jersey.
But the peer group lists are
raising questions of its accuracy.
There are still a lot of ques-
tions in regard to how they came
up with that listing, and we
havent really gotten any answers
yet, Denholm said.
A few schools on Easterns peer
group list are Hoboken Charter
School, Princeton High School
and Colts Neck High School.
Schools compared to Eastern in
the surrounding area are Seneca
High School, Cherokee High
School and Cinnaminson High
School.
The comparison to these town-
ships brought a few concerns to
board members.
Board member Hillary Garr
said comparing Eastern to Hobo-
ken Charter School, which pays
for students to take the SAT test,
is not comparing schools apples
to apples.
I am flabbergasted because,
demographically, we dont even
compare to those districts, Garr
said, adding all high school demo-
graphics should be taken into
consideration when comparing
the schools.
She said she could see Eastern
as more demographically compa-
rable to Cherry Hill.
The number of students taking
the ACT is not calculated.
We have a growing number of
students that take the ACT test,
Superintendent Harold Melleby
said, adding more colleges are be-
ginning to accept ACT scores for
admittance.
According to Melleby, there are
between 20-25 percent of graduat-
ing seniors who attend a commu-
nity college.
He said community colleges ac-
cept both the SAT and ACT.
Denholm said thats part of the
peer group question many dis-
tricts are asking.
We are being compared to
some pretty high schools, she
said.
But the Eastern board mem-
bers are going to look at the areas
where the school can improve
when compared to peer schools.
When compared to peer
schools, Eastern falls in the 37th
percentile in academic achieve-
ment, the 60th percentile in col-
lege and career readiness and the
13th percentile in graduation and

When compared to the state,
Eastern ranks in the 62nd per-
centile for academic achieve-
ment, the 76th percentile in col-
lege and career readiness, and the
45th percentile in graduation and
post-secondary.
According to the states per-
formance report, a high perform-
ance is ranked between the 60th
and 80th percentile, average is
ranked between the 40th and 60th,
lagging performance is ranked
between the 20th and 39th, and
significantly lagging falls below
the 20th percentile.
Eastern looks better compared
to the state rankings, Denholm
said.
However, she said this gives the
school district the opportunity to
improve in certain areas.
Melleby said the board would
further review the report, and ad-
justments would be made where
needed.

kicked off its Fourth Annual
Abilities Awareness Week with
an all-abilities 5K and one-mile

School. The beautiful weather
brought out approximately 150
people of all ages to run the 5K
through the Lost Tree section of
Voorhees or complete a mile on
the track at Voorhees Middle
School. The event kicked off the
2013 Voorhees Abilities Aware-
ness Week, April 13 to April 21, a
weeklong celebration of the
achievements of the disabled and
an awareness campaign to pro-
mote understanding and accept-
ance of people with disabilities in
the community.
