Gift of Language 1. Write a short essay on the evolution of English with the help of your text.

English has been growing because of borrowings from other language, inventions and discoveries. The first people of Britain were Celts and they spoke Celtic. From Celtic developed Welsh, Scots and Irish. The Celtic people were conquered by the Romans who brought Latin into Britain. When the Romans left, the Anglo Saxons and the Jutes came invading. The Anglo Saxons were agricultural people. More than 80% of the English words come from Anglo Saxon. Towards the end of the 6th century missionaries came bringing with them Greek and Latin words. Then came the Vikings from Denmark. But Alfred the Great defeated him. But some Danes still remained in the north of England and many Danish words got into English. Then came the Normans who speak French. For the next 300 years three main languages were used in Britain English, Latin and French. However, in course of time, English became more influential. By the time of Shakespeare English had established itself as the language of England. Today, the language has spread around the world and has deeply established itself as a link-language. 2. But none of these symbolic systems has the power and flexibility of language. 3.
