Women-led, gender justice media making has a long history in the US. To the best of Media Equity!s knowledge, as of March 2013 this is its current geographic location. When I started a cruder version of this map four years ago, ony 12 states were “orange”. A swath of draconian laws in state legislatures last year brought that up to 24! The central point is, that there is a correlationbetween where women!s voices have a public (media) platform and positive laws that advance women!s (health) rights. Especially when looked at with a map of electoral districts, there is a strong relationship between electing progressive women to office (or the lack of) and where women!s issues are reported in local/regional media. This persistent lack of information is a Human Rights issue (Article 19 UCHR). -- Ariel Dougherty, @MediaEquity ArielCamera@gmail.com
