March, 2013

To Whom It May Concern: I am pleased to write this letter of reference for Dana Hansen. Dana has spent the spring semester of 2013 with me as a student teacher in three of my physics classes. Her student teaching experience has been split between physics and teaching Algebra for half the day. I have been a high school chemistry and physics teacher for 24 years, and have enjoyed working with Dana during her time at Southeast Polk High School. Dana has a strong background in the subject of physics. She is extremely confident and comfortable in front of the students. Within the first week of her student teaching experience she was already working collaboratively with me in the classroom and becoming familiar with the students. After just three weeks Dana was starting to take over instruction in the classroom. She has excellent verbal communication skills and works very hard on building positive relationships with students. Her efforts to build these positive relationships have led to having a well-managed and highly engaged learning environment in the classroom. Dana has been very open to suggestions during her student teaching experience and is very coachable. She is extremely positive and willing to try new methods of instruction. She sets the standards very high for her students and provides them with multiple opportunities to meet these standards. Dana understands the need to differentiate instruction within the classroom. While at Southeast Polk, Dana has participated in our science PLC and Data Teams. She has joined us in starting down the path of adopting the Next Generation Science Standards. She has a strong background in the Nature of Science and incorporates this into her instructional plan. It is without reservation that I would recommend Dana Hansen for a teaching position. She has a passion for teaching and would become a valuable component to any school district. If you have any further questions with regard to her qualifications, please do not hesitate to contact me. Sincerely,

Susan Whinery Physics Instructor Southeast Polk High School 7945 NE University Ave. Pleasant Hill, IA 50327 (515) 967-6631 ext. 2382 susan.whinery@southeastpolk.org
