MEDICAL STUDY CORROBORATES TAO

A recent medical study proved that laughter is good for the heart. Laughing, the study showed, expands arteries and renders benefit similar to 20 minutes of jogging. Participants in the study watched comedies like "There's Something About Mary" and were checked after a good round of laughing. Taoist masters taught that laughter heals thousands of years ago. To capture the healing benefits of laughter, Taoists gave the world The Inner Smile and Six Healing Sounds. Both of these exercises can be found on this web page. I believe another reason why laughter is so therapeutic has to do with the action of laughter upon the lower diaphragm. Emotional energy is stored in the navel chakra and the lower Tan Tien, about 2 inches beneath the navel. Any hard jerking action of the lower abdomen (bellows breathing, laughter, crying, singing) causes crying and a sense of emptying heavy emotions. Perhaps one reason women live about 4 years longer than men is that women are less ashamed to cry. (As a man, I only let myself cry when I watch a clip of Secretariet blowing away the field at Belmont. Or when I see Buddy Ryan punching that other coach for the Oilers.) Deep diaphragmatic breathing (pot-bellied breathing) can empty the lower Tan Tien and, like laughter, stimulate the flow of good chemicals into the bloodstream.
