" In the S a n g a m era, it w a s i m p e r a t i v e that a man w a s brought up to be b r a v e , and so the m o t h e r ' s w o r d s reflect t h e spirit of the era. T h e verse by Pon M u d i y a r g o e s on to say that the k i n g ' s duty w a s to be a m a n of upright c o n d u c t , so that his subjects would be p e o p l e of g o o d c o n d u c t t o o . A r u n a g i r i n a t h a says in a verse that animals are referred to as ' K a a l n a d a i ' in Tamil. ' K a a l n a d a i ' m e a n s ' a n i m a l s that h a v e l e g s ' .
