1. Scope
The scope covers the fIre protectIon system whIch Includes FIre water PumpIng system,
Hydrant System, AutomatIc Dperated |edIum 7elocIty Water Spray System and Hand
ApplIances suItable for the type of rIsk / fIre for dIfferent buIldIngs, equIpments, storage
tanks etc.

3. FIre Hydrant and Water System 0escrIptIon
The followIng type of systems shall be provIded for the LPC TermInal at 8athInda.
J.1. FIre Water PumpIng System
FIre Water PumpIng System comprIses of 0Iesel EngIne drIven pumps of 410 m / hr at
8.8 Kg /cm
2
g (4 WorkIng + 2 Standby) and ElectrIc motor drIven Jockey pumps of 20
m / hr at 8.8 Kg /cm
2
g (1 WorkIng + 1 Standby), SuctIon / 0elIvery pIpIng, StraIners,
Cate 7alves, Check 7alves, Ìnstruments, 0Iesel EngIne Control Panels for auto
operatIon of FIre Pumps etc. shall be Installed In common FIre Water Pump House.
FIre Water Pumps wIll draw the water from two dedIcated FIre Water Tanks each
havIng fIre water storage capacIty of J500 kl

|ake·up water system wIll be provIded at the Inlet of the FIre water tanks, whIch
consIsts of make up water pumps of suItable capacIty mounted on the make·up water
compartment of the underground sump. A 2" fresh water lIne wIll be provIded at the
Inlet of the |ake up water sump. Alternately, raw water from the bore wells wIll be
provIded as an alternate source.
The make·up water pump / borewell shall start automatIcally whenever the level In
any of the two fIre water tanks falls below 500 mm from the maxImum level of the
tank. The pump shall stop automatIcally when the level shall reach the maxImum
level.
|ake up fIre water compartment of the underground sump wIll store maInly potable
water but even bore well pump water can be sourced to fIll the make up fIre water
sump, In case of emergency.
The fIre water tanks are provIded wIth level swItch connectIons near the tank bottom and
tank top. The level swItch provIded at the tank top shall control the on·off of the |ake up
water pumps, to maIntaIn the total level In the tank to the requIred capacIty.
The level swItch at the tank bottom shall be ensure that the fIre water pumps do not run dry
at low low level In the tank.

The fIre water storage tanks shall be provIded wIth a level swItch whIch Is a part of |aIn
Control Panel Installed In |aIn |CC block to IndIcate both Low·low level and HIgh·hIgh level
alarm / IndIcatIon at |aIn Control Foom.

0Iesel engIne control panel Installed at FIre Water Pump House (supplIed and
Installed by fIre pump vendor, hookIng up, cablIng E commIssIonIng to be done by
bIdder) shall have followIng

. -Auto/manual swItch for start/stop of 0Iesel engIne pump
. -8attery charger(s) wIth battery selector swItch for workIng + standby sets of batterIes
. -FaIl to start Alarm/IndIcatIon

. -HIgh coolIng water temperature Alarm/IndIcatIon
. -Fuel low level Alarm/IndIcatIon
. -Dver speed Alarm/IndIcatIon
. -Low hydrant pressure Alarm/IndIcatIon

All above alarms shall be repeated at |aIn Control Foom In |aIn |CC room


PotentIal free ND/NC contacts shall be provIded by Hydrant system contractor along
wIth pressure, level, flow swItches and pump faIlure relay contacts. These contacts
shall be used by fIre detectIon vendor to map thIs on fIre detectIon and alarm system
wIth date and tIme stampIng. |onItor modules shall be provIded by the fIre detectIon
and alarm system vendor In marshallIng box near pump/ EngIne control panel.

J.2. FIre Hydrant System
Hydrant system comprIses of a network of pIpIng Installed mostly above ground on sleepers
around the areas to be protected and underground pIpIng at road crossIng and paved areas
etc. 0ouble Headed Hydrants, Water |onItors, FIre Hoses, Hose cabInets, 8ranch PIpe wIth
nozzles wIll be placed at strategIc locatIons as per DÌS0 144.

The FIre Hydrant header sIzes shall be desIgned, as per DÌS0 144, for the mInImum resIdual
pressure of 7 Kg / cm g at hydraulIc remotest poInt of applIcatIon In the plant.

FIre hydrant system shall be In closed loops to ensure multIdIrectIonal flow In the system.
ÌsolatIon valves shall be provIded to enable IsolatIon of any sectIon of the network wIthout
affectIng the flow In the rest. The IsolatIon valves shall be located normally near the loop
junctIon. AddItIonal IsolatIon valves shall be provIded In the segments where, the length of
the segment exceeds J00 |ts. ThIs entIre system wIll be provIded by the |echanIcal / pIpIng
contractor.

0ouble headed hydrants, Water |onItors shall be placed J0m apart In the entIre TermInal
except In non·hazardous area, where they shall be spaced at 45m Interval. Hydrant / |onItor
stand post shall be located 15m away from the perIphery of storage tank or equIpment under
protectIon. Ìn case of non·hazardous buIldIngs thIs dIstance shall not be less than 2m and not
more than 15m. Hydrants /|onItors shall be located along road sIde for easy accessIbIlIty.
Each hydrant stand pIpe wIll be 100 mm sIze wIth two 80mm outlets for two separate hydrant
valves. Each hydrant wIll be provIded wIth a Hose 8ox contaInIng 2 x 15m long fIre hose pIpes
wIth Instantaneous couplIng to ÌS 6J6 (Type A), 8ranch pIpe wIth nozzle, spanner, etc.
|onItors shall be used to protect the tanks/equIpments and shall not be Installed wIthIn 15m
of hazardous equIpment. The locatIon of |onItor shall not exceed 45 m from the hazard to be
protected. FIre water flow rate through a hydrant Is consIdered as J6m /hr and through a
monItor as 144 m

J.J. AutomatIcally Dperated |edIum 7elocIty Water Spray System
AutomatIcally Dperated |edIum 7elocIty Water Spray System tapped from hydrant system
Includes PIpe and PIpe FIttIngs, Water Spray Nozzles of suItable K factor (Nozzle Factor), Cate
7alve, StraIner etc. The Nozzles shall be of a capacIty to generate good qualIty water spray at
a pressure of 1.4 to J.5 kg /cm
2
. Each nozzle shall have mInImum orIfIce of 6mm.
Water spray system shall be desIgned wIth a desIgn densIty of 10.2 LP| / m
2
for all areas
requIrIng fIre spray system except product LPC pump / compressor house whIch Is desIgned
for water spray densIty of 20.4 LP| / m2 .

J.4. Hand ApplIances
The quantIty and locatIon of Potable FIre ExtInguIshers shall be desIgned as per DÌS0 144,
2008.

4. FIre Hydrant and Water Spray System DperatIon
8rIef operatIon of fIre protectIon system Is as under
4.1. FIre Water PumpIng System
All |aIn FIre Water Pumps along wIth Jockey Pump shall be kept In auto posItIon for
Its automatIc operatIon durIng emergency. The jockey pump shall maIntaIn a
mInImum header pressure of 7.0 Kg/Sq. cm In the farthest poInt of entIre fIre water
network. Jockey pumps shall start automatIcally at the 6.5 Kg/Sq. cm preset pressure
and stop automatIcally at the 8.0 Kg / Sq. cm. Ìn case the demand of water Is more
than the capacIty of jockey pump, the header pressure (IndIcated by pressure swItch
(1W+1S) mounted on the header) shall drop down, whIch wIll InItIate the startIng of
the fIrst maIn dIesel drIven fIre water pump. Ìn case the header pressure contInues to
drop down, the second maIn dIesel drIven fIre water pump shall get started after a
pre·set tIme Interval. The same phIlosophy shall be followed for the start of the
subsequent maIn fIre water pumps. Each maIn fIre water pump shall have Its own
control panel. maIn pump(s) shall start automatIcally at preset pressures. A duty
selectIon swItch provIded In the control room shall determIne the sequence of
trIggerIng of the maIn fIre water pumps. The maIn pump(s) shall have to be stopped
manually. All the pumps shall be started sequentIally durIng fIre condItIon through
the control panel Installed at FIre Water Pump House.

4.2. FIre Hydrant System
Ìn the unlIkely event of a fIre In the termInal, one end of fIre hose(s) shall be
connected to the outlet of hydrant valve and branch pIpe wIth nozzle shall be
attached to Its other end. Upon openIng of the valve, water shall flow through the
hose(s) and the water jet through the nozzle shall be dIrected towards the seat of
fIre. 0ependIng upon the IntensIty of fIre water monItors shall be operated. The
effectIve fIre fIghtIng through the traIned personnel wIll reduce the loss.

4.J. AutomatIcally Dperated |edIum 7elocIty Water Spray System
The water spray system shall be automatIc In operatIon. The system shall extInguIsh
any out break of fIre. Upon Dn detectIon of fIre through Q80 (Quartz bulb 0etector),
the deluge valve shall be opened automatIcally, allowIng water to flow through the
spray header and eventually floodIng the entIre protected area from the spray
nozzles. The deluge valve shall be kept In shut posItIon through pneumatIc actuatIon
system aIr pressure actIng on up stream of deluge valve. Dn actuatIon of Q80 the
pneumatIc wIll drop and the valve wIll open. The entIre area of zone wIll be flooded.
Dne deluge valve shall be provIded for each zone. Ìn case of adjoInIng zones adjacent
deluge valve shall also come Into operatIon. The operatIon of deluge valve shall have
IndIcatIon on fIre alarm panel as well as maIn panel.

4.4. Hand ApplIances
Hand applIances lIke 0CP (0ry ChemIcal Powder), Sand 8ucket, CD2 are used to
extInguIsh InItIal stage of fIre. Each extInguIsher shall be operated as per operatIon
InstructIons gIven on each extInguIsher.
