2011 “Fall Footholds” Concert Treats Audiences to Diverse Dance Styles The University of Hawai’i at Mānoa’s Department of Theatre and Dance presents its annual “Fall Footholds,” a dance concert of student work Oct. 12, 13, 14, and 15 at 8 p.m., and Oct. 16 at 2 p.m. at the Earle Ernst Lab Theatre. There will be a post-show rap following the Friday, Oct. 14 performance. Undergraduate and graduate student performers, choreographers, technicians and designers come together to produce this eclectic dance concert that appeals to a wide variety of artistic tastes. This year’s “Fall Footholds” will feature works that range from contemporary choreography that is influenced by Pacific and Asian dance to hip hop and modern dance. David Heller kicks-off the concert with the unique and intricate styles of breaking and popping in a pre-show presentation outside the theatre. He will be joined by a group of dancers who display individual dance styles, yet all fall under the general realm of hip-hop dance. Cross-cultural dances include a duet by Sami Akuna and Rohini Acharya who intertwine Asian theatrical styles, contemporary dance, and bharatanatyam (a classical dance form from the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu). Mayu Ota presents a modern dance influenced by Japanese bon dancing; Clara Bowden-Kerby will present a fusion of Pacific Island dances; Devon Ishigawa will present Chinese martial dance; and new modern dance works are contributed by Cher Anabo, Antonia Brown, Angie Haugejordon, Meghen McKinley, and Rashida Vennie. Jordon Rull, Tyler Tuiasosopo, Jeffrey Wong and Jason Wong present “Aging Soles” a humorous piece that refers to both the literal idea of the street - MORE -
