  MEDIA RELEASE

Halifax,  Wednesday  1  May  2013       Halifax’s  Aussie  rules  football  team  heads  to  Montreal  tournament     Nova  Scotia’s  own  Australian  football  team,  The  Halifax  Dockers,  head  to   Montreal  this  month  to  take  part  in  their  first  tournament.     The  Dockers,  made  up  of  expat  Aussies  and  Canadians,  formed  in  2009.    From  a   humble  two-‐person  team  to  the  current  squad  of  25,  they  now  meet  twice  a  week   to  train.       Aussie  expat  and  Dockers  founder  Jonah  Scott  said:  “Our  boys  are  really  excited   for  the  tournament.  We  can’t  wait  to  see  how  we  match  up  against  other  Canadian   teams  –  the  Nova  Scotians  to  show  off  their  Aussie  rules  talents,  and  the  Aussies  to   show  that  they  still  know  what  they’re  doing.”     Games  will  be  played  in  a  condensed  version  of  ‘footy’  –  as  Aussies  call  it  –  with   slightly  smaller  fields  and  teams  of  nine  as  opposed  to  18.  The  Dockers  will  be   playing  against  four  teams  from  the  Quebec  Australian  Football  League,  a  team   from  Ottawa,  one  from  Boston  and  one  from  as  far  south  as  Baltimore,  Maryland.       The  Halifax  Dockers  will  represent  Nova  Scotia  at  the  Montreal  tournament   wearing  jerseys  provided  by  their  partner  club  The  Fremantle  Dockers  who  are   located  in  Fremantle,  Western  Australia.     Scott  said:  “The  Fremantle  Dockers  were  a  natural  fit  with  our  team  –  both  cities   have  a  strong  link  to  the  ocean  and  shipping  culture.  We  hope  to  do  Halifax  proud”.     The  Dockers  head  to  Montreal  for  the  weekend  of  the  11th  and  12th  of  May.  You   can  follow  their  progress  on  the  Nova  Scotia  AFL  Twitter  at:  <@NovaScotiaAFL>.       #ENDS#

    BACKGROUNDER

What  is  Australian  rules  football?   Australian  rules  football  –  known  affectionately  as  ‘Aussie  rules’  and  ‘footy’  –  is  a   uniquely  Australian  sport.  In  Australia  the  highest  competitive  level  of  play  is  the   Australian  Football  League  (AFL)  which  enjoys  the  highest  spectator  attendance   of  any  sport  in  the  country.       It  is  played  between  two  teams  of  18  players  a  side  on  an  oval  shaped  ground.   Players  can  position  themselves  anywhere  on  the  ground  and  use  several   methods  to  move  the  ball:  kicking,  handballing  and  running  with  the  ball.  The   football  made  of  leather  is  oval  shaped.  The  objective  is  to  move  the  ball  down   field  and  kick  the  ball  through  the  team’s  two  tall  goal  posts.  The  team  who   scores  the  most  points  and  goals  after  four  20  minute  quarters  wins.       Of  course  there’s  more  to  the  game  than  that,  why  not  contact  us  to  get  involved   and  have  a  go?     Who  are  The  Halifax  Dockers?   The  Halifax  Dockers  were  formed  when  two  Halifax-‐based  Aussie  expats,  Jonah   Scott  and  Joel  Porter,  met  in  2009  and  decided  to  go  for  a  kick  on  the  Halifax   Commons.  Three  years  later  the  team  of  25  players  meets  twice  a  week  to  train.   The  Dockers  are  a  partner  club  of  The  Fremantle  Dockers  Football  Club  based  in   Fremantle,  Western  Australia.       What  is  the  Nova  Scotia  Australian  Football  League  (NSAFL)?   The  NSAFL  is  the  newly  formed  Nova  Scotian  league  of  Australian  rules  football.   Currently  the  league  has  one  team,  The  Halifax  Dockers,  but  the  sky  is  the  limit.   As  interest  grows,  so  will  the  teams.  The  NSAFL  hopes  to  grow  to  men’s,  women’s   and  high  school  teams  within  five  years  forging  partnerships  with  AFL  teams  in   Australia.
