START

Breaking from the No. 16 post, Orb isn’t rushed during the mad scramble as the 19 horses try to find a comfortable spot for the run around the first turn. Early on, it is Normandy Invasion and Oxbow challenging for the lead.

FIRST TURN
Emerging around the bend for the long backstretch run is 24-1 Palace Malice and 8-1 Goldencents, who gives part-owner Rick Pitino some early thrills. Orb is back in 16th place.

BACKSTRETCH
Jockey Mike Smith is trying to rate Palace Malice with lots of race left, but there’s pressure approaching — Oxbow and 4-for-4 Verrazano.

INTO THE STRETCH
With Verrazano’s run done, and Palace Malice dropping back, Normandy Invasion and Oxbow are on the lead, with Orb starting to move into contention.

FINISH
The tired early leaders are fading near the wire, as Orb completes his run 21⁄2 lengths better than another strong closer, Golden Soul.
