Rod Kilborn Ballarat Bearings

Rod Kilborn and Ballarat Bearings was the 2012 winner of the CGU Commerce Ballarat Business Excellence Awards for Newbiz solutions Online presence Award. Since joining his father at Ballarat Bearings Rod has transformed a typical family small business in a regional town, into a modern shackle free enterprise. By turning the business weaknesses (a small customer base, with a large and complex product offer) into its core strength Ballarat Bearings has been able to re-establish its logistics, and warehousing so that these specialised products can be offered Australia wide via the internet, growing the potential customers from 1,000 businesses to around 80,000 Australia wide. Thus opening better product offers to all of their customers and improving the quality of job and work conditions for Ballarat Bearings employees. Ballarat Bearings in one year has turned online sales from zero to a top 3 customer, and aim for it to be the number one customer by the end of the year. The increase in products offered online have complimented the warehouse style shop presences Ballarat Bearings has, thus grown this business as well. As an accountant Rod understands that profits are key to business success, but by changing the business operations he has been able to reduce prices to the end user while increasing his bottom line.
