Prove an addition of two odd numbers is an even number.

Let O be a set of odd numbers and E be a set of even numbers. O = {2n + 1 | n ∈ Z, n ≥ 0} (1) (2)

E = {2n | n ∈ Z, n > 0}

Let x1 and x2 be integers such that x1 , x2 ∈ O, then an addition of two odd numbers are defined as follows: x1 + x2 = = = (2n + 1) + (2n + 1) 2(2n + 1) 2m where m = 2n + 1 (3) (4) (5)

Since m ∈ Z and m > 0, by definition, we may state: x1 + x2 = 2m ∈ E Therefore, an addition of two odd numbers is an even number. (6)
