Letter to the Editor: Agenda 21 in Boston, MA

Dear Editor: The Banker and Tradesman reported that the Boston City Council by a 9-4 vote approved of Mayor Menino's Energy Disclosure Ordinance. This Orwellian rule will force owners of building over 35,000 square feet to report to the city their water and energy use. In a statement, Menino said that "In order for Boston to continue to be a sustainable leader, our buildings must aggressively invest in cost effective energy efficiency." Menino claims that "Bostonians demand buildings with high performance and this ordinance will encourage building owners to meet that demand" In a community that values freedom and liberty, the private sector has no need for intrusive mandates from government officials who know nothing about running commercial property, and the dynamics of the market. It is the nature of free people who own property to be as cost effective and efficient as possible. Menino knows nothing about effective energy efficiency but he is a disciple of the discredited billionaire Al Gore. Menino didn't not come up with this unconstitutional, job killing and rent increasing scheme on his own. It originated with the International Council on Local Environmental Initiatives (ICLEI). ICLEI was founded in 1990 at the United Nation's headquarters in New York for the sole purpose of implementing the UN's power grab know as Agenda 21. In addition to ICLEI, Boston belongs to the state-wide Agenda 21 promoting scheme called Green Communities. Cities and towns that belong to ICLEI and Green Communities are implementing dozens of initiatives that kill jobs, restrict home and business owners while making some contractors and wind and solar panel companies wealthy at the taxpayer expense. Bostonians should reject Agenda 21 and schemes like this energy disclosure ordinance.
