This is a follow-up to my April 2, 2009, letter to you regarding the 21" Century Interactive
Classroom Technology initiative and recent media coverage of this initiative.
As you can see from the information in the April 2 letter, there is no shortfall in e-Rate revenues that
would prevent Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) from paying the second installment of
the lease payment for the Promethean Boards in FY 2010. In addition to the $3.9 million of
unexpended e-Rate funds from previous years, we anticipate receiving between $1.6 and $1.8 million
this year. Therefore, more than $5.5 million will be available for this payment of $3.4 million. As T
indicated in my letter to you, we anticipate additional capital budget funds in FY 2011 and FY 2012
to support the third and fourth payments for the Promethean Boards. In the event this additional
funding is not provided, we will use existing technology funding in the capital budget to go along
with e-Rate funding to make the third payment in FY 2011 and the final payment in FY 2012
Despite the misinformation provided in The Examiner article yesterday, MCPS has the resources to
‘continue the funding for this innovative technology.
If you have any questions, please call Mr. Larry A. Bowers, chief operating officer, at 301-279-3626
