It has emerged that the 'Bands Under The Radar' podcast which describes itself as “featuring unsigned bands and indie artists” is, in fact, a product of Warner Brothers Records [WBR]. Although the show has a low-budget indie feel and includes a 'donate' button, the podcast is created by a WBR employee, features WBR artists, advertises other WBR offerings and is delivered from WBR’s web server. Presenter Kami Knake, who is WBR’s new media co-ordinator in the US, denied that there was a link: "I do play WBR artists, but that's by choice. My podcast has nothing to do with WBR." However, George Smyth, president of the Association of Music Podcasting [AMP], commented: "When we found out that Warner Brothers, and, therefore, the major labels, are in the podcasting business, we were very excited to hear the news. AMP currently has over 100 members, many of who would love the opportunity to distribute tracks legally cleared by Warner Brothers and the other majors.” WBR has been criticised in the past for allegedly spamming anonymous blog comments across the internet to promote its acts.
