Audi MediaInfo

Foreword
The prestigious duel between Audi and Mercedes-Benz dominated the DTM for six years. A duel that saw Audi win the championship tussle 4:2. Following the comeback of BMW for the 2012 season and beyond this duel becomes a three-way fight between the large German premium manufacturers a battle that DTM fans have waited 20long years for. Here at Audi we relish the challenge and, in the form of our elegant A5 Coup, are convinced that we have the perfect base for the new DTM rules. Regulations, for which Audi played a leading role in their creation, set standards worldwide in the important areas of safety, cost-efficiency and desirability. We hope that this MediaInfo booklet is a useful companion for you throughout the 2012 DTM season.

Audi in the DTM in 2012

The DTM takes off: new regulations, new Coups and premiere of the Audi A5 DTM
The DTM takes off in the 2012 season: with new technical regulations that are pioneering in the fields of safety, costefficiency and desirability of the race cars, with exciting Coups from Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz and with the premiere season of the new Audi A5 DTM. And with a highly motivated Audi squad that will leave no stone unturned in its quest to bring another DTM title back to Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm. V8, TT, and A4 each of the three models with which Audi joined the DTM grid previously won at least one championship title in its lifetime. Following eight successful years with the A4 the brand with the four rings fields a factory backed two-door Coup the A5 for the first time in the most popular international touring car race series. The three veteran Audi Sport Teams Abt Sportsline, Phoenix and Rosberg compete with a total of eight new Audi A5DTM cars whereby Audi Sport has already achieved a new in-house record before the first race: never before have so many new cars been built for a DTM season. In 2004 when the Audi factory returned to the DTM it was six cars. Since

Changing of the guard: the new Audi A5 DTM (right) and its victorious predecessor the A4

then a maximum of four new race cars have been built per year. In 2012 there are only new cars on the grid for the first time ever since the DTM was re-launched in the year 2000. To develop a completely new race car for new technical regulations and to produce eight identical replicas as well as guaranteeing the spare parts supply is logistically very difficult and was only possible through the absolute commitment of the entire Audi squad and our teams, explains Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. Iam, however, convinced that it will pay off since we have the opportunity to make the worlds best touring car series out of the DTM this year. All three factory teams were integrated in the development and testing program of the new Audi A5 DTM from the very beginning and therefore start the new DTM era with equal chances. The same applies to the driver squad which remains almost unchanged compared to the 2011 season. The sole newcomer is the youthful 21-year old Frenchman Adrien Tambay, who fought his way through a multi-stage young driver assessment test, and is team mate to the young Swiss Rahel Frey at Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline. The pair of two-time DTM Champions Mattias Ekstrm

(Sweden) and Timo Scheider (Germany), who also start for Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline, spearhead the Audi driver squad. Miguel Molina (Spain) and Mike Rockenfeller (Germany) drive for Audi Sport Team Phoenix which produced last years Champion. With Filipe Albuquerque (Portugal) and Edoardo Mortara (Italy/France) Audi Sport Team Rosberg compete with the same drivers as last year. Points are awarded at a total of ten DTM events in 2012. On top of this comes a show event staged once again in Munich Olympic Stadium. Audis target for the season is the same as every year: We aim to be battling for wins and to bring ourselves into a position from which we can also fight for the title in the end, says Dr. Ullrich. Its clear that this year that could well be a little more difficult than in the years before.

For the first time ever and with the help of the teams Audi Sport has simultaneously built

The Audi A5 Coup already today a modern classic

The new Audi A5 DTM forms the spearhead of the sporting A5 family even though it is currently exclusively reserved for the companys race drivers. However, the production models also fulfill almost every wish: be it A5, S5 or RS 5 Coup, Sportback or Cabriolet a total of seven models are available. The state-of-the-art engine range extends from a particularly economical 2.0 TDI producing 105 kW (143 hp) to a high-performance V8 pushing out 331 kW (450hp) in the exceptional RS 5 Coup. With its captivating lines the Audi A5 Coup is today, only five years after its market launch in 2007, a modern classic. Audi received the Designpreis der Bundesrepublik Deutschland for it in 2010. With its elegant looks and unique feeling of space the A5 Coup has taken the hearts of Audi customers by storm. The A5 DTM is based on the latest version which is recognized, since the latest product facelift in summer 2011, by its striking, wedge-shaped headlights. TFSI technology from motorsport The two-door Coup also brings along excellent features for everyday life. Its luggage compartment lid opens automatically, the rear seatbacks can be folded down separately. Thanks to the lightweight steel body with aluminum front fenders the basis versions unladen weight is restricted to a mere 1,425 kilograms. One of the most interesting engines is the compact high-tech 1.8 TFSI gasoline engine with an average fuel consumption of a mere 5.7 liters per 100 km. The combination of turbocharging and direct injection TFSI for short originates, like so

The engine range extends from the economical 2.0 TDI to the highperformance V8 producing

Mattias Ekstrm and the new Audi RS 5 which, with 450 hp, is almost as powerful as the Audi A5 DTM

All three A5 body styles Coup, Cabriolet and Sportback are also available as unique sporting S models that excel through strong performance, subtle understatement, a wealth of standard and optional equipment and versatile everyday practicality and which transmit their power to the road via the permanent four-wheel drive quattro. In the S5 range the S5 Sportback, S5 Coup and S5 Cabriolet the 3.0TFSI with 245kW (333 hp) and 440 Nm torque is used. The V6 compressor consumes an average of only 8.1liters per 100km. The dynamic performance figures are impressive: the S5 Coup sprints from standstill to highway pace in 4.9seconds. Audi RS 5: the darling of many Audi factory drivers The highlight and darling of many Audi factory drivers like Timo Scheider or Adrien Tambay is the Audi RS 5 Coup. Its 4.2 FSI, a high-revving normally aspirated V8, produces 331kW (450 hp) at 8,250 rpm, its 430 Nm torque are on tap between 4,000 and 6,000 revs. The high-performance Coup sprints from zero to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds, if desired Audi limits the maximum speed first at 280 km/h.

many other technologies at Audi, from motorsport: it made a triumphant debut in Le Mans in 2001. The Audi A5 Cabriolet, equipped with a classic fabric hood like every other open topped Audi, is available since 2009. It opens and closes in good 15 seconds thanks to its fully automatic operation. The A5 family is completed since September 2009 by the A5 Sportback a particularly elegant five-door vehicle with a luggage compartment capacity of up to 1,283 liters.

Audi Sport

Intense season of big challenges

Audi Sport has been, as part of Technical Development (TE) of AUDI AG, a guarantee for success in motorsport for more than three decades. Be it rallying, touring cars or sport prototypes: in every discipline in which Audi has competed as factory to date, the brand with the four rings has celebrated important victories and won numerous championship titles worldwide often in connection with new technologies like quattro drive, TFSI, TDI or ultra lightweight design and construction. Audi Sport has realized 18 different racing projects to date from the legendary original quattro (R1) to the latest LMP1 sportscar R18. The Audi A5 DTM was developed to a ready to race state under the project name R17. Currently around 200 employees at the Ingolstadt and Neckarsulm sites are responsible for the development and testing of the race cars. Doctorate of Mechanical Engineering Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich has been Head of Audi Sport since 1993. The challenges Audi Sport faces this year are particularly big: with the A5 DTM and R18 e-tron quattro with hybrid drive two completely new race cars were developed in parallel for the two most important fields of activity DTM and sport prototypes. Furthermore, several races in the DTM and new FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) 2012 are held on the same weekends. Audi Sports busy race season is completed by factory backed events with the GT3 sportscar R8 LMS ultra in the two 24-hour race at the Nrburgring and Spa-Francorchamps.

Greater safety, reduced costs, spectacular look: the new Audi A5 DTM
The Audi A5 DTM, which was developed under the project name R17 internally at Audi Sport, complies with the new technical regulations that come into force for the 2012 season. At the same time the responsible parties also targeted three premises: car safety, a cost reduction of up to 40 per cent and a spectacular appearance. The final aspect is visible at first glance. The Audi A5 DTM appears lower and squatter than its predecessor the A4DTM with which Audi won five of the last eight DTM titles. A new and innovative chassis in hybrid design hides under the bodywork manufactured entirely from carbon. With its front, rear and lateral crash elements the combination of carbonfiber monocoque and steel roll-cage sets new standards with regard to safety for a racing touring car. Furthermore, the chassis, which weighs just 160 kilograms, is one of about 50 identical components shared by all DTM cars. Thanks to these standard parts it was possible to achieve the targeted cost reduction of up to 40 per cent while still improving the safety and appeal of DTM cars, says Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich under whose supervision the new Audi A5 DTM was developed.

Imposing appearance: the Audi A5 DTM appears flatter and wide than its predecessor

The Audi A5 DTM is comprised of about

4,000 individual parts about 50

of them are identical in every DTM car

Striking feature of the new DTM generation: a larger rear wing (right)

The A5 DTM is 5.01 meters long, 1.95 meters wide and only 1.15 meters high. The wheelbase of every DTM car is a uniform 2.750 millimeters. Like its predecessor, the A5DTM is powered by a near 340 kW (460 hp) Audi Sport V8 engine. A new development with partner Hewland is the six-speed gearbox now activated pneumatically via shift paddles mounted on the steering wheel. When compared to a classic manual shift, the more precise gear shift procedure facilitates a significant increase in gearbox service life of up to 24,000 kilometers. The Bosch MS 5.1 engine electronics, which function without fuses, and the central display already used in the Audi R8LMS are also state-of-the-art. The exclusive tire partner Hankook supplies larger and wider tires the dimension of which resemble those used on LMP2 sportscars. Integrated into the Audi A5 DTM carbon fiber cell is a 120 liter safety

Safety is top priority: in the A5 DTM the driver sits in a monocoque manufactured from carbon

12 13 monocoque weighs only 126 kilograms, the roll-cage 32.5 kilos. At the same time the safety standards have increased dramatically. The design is extremely stable when subject to not just frontal, longitudinal crashes but also side impacts. The entire sidewall must withstand a force of 360 kN during the side impact test, this equates to around 36 tones. By way of comparison, this value was 80 kN for the A4 DTM, which demonstrated its high safety standards in several spectacular accidents. Only the engine subframe at the front and gearbox at the rear restrict the engineers freedom as far as the suspension geometry is concerned. The suspension pick-up points must be mounted to these standard elements. In addition, the material, steel, and tube dimensions are fixed and numerous dimensions defined by the regulations the wheels for example. Aerodynamic possibilities were also restricted. Air flow through the bodywork as seen on the A4 DTM and complex additional winglets at the rear are now prohibited. Visual similarity to the production line model is significantly greater as a result and, at the same time, the new DTM cars should react less sensitively to contact and create a better slipstream also thanks to the larger rear wing.

fuel tank with which the current DTM race distance can be completed making a stop for fuel since refueling during a DTM race is no longer permitted for safety reasons. In general new standards are set with the cell, explains Stefan Aicher, Head of Vehicle Design at Audi Sport. The

Audi had very innovative solutions in the past in the DTM and especially for the aerodynamics, says Dr. Martin Mhlmeier, Head of Technology at Audi Sport. Since these areas were strongly restricted it is now more about detail solutions to acquire an advantage over the competition. Audi was also always a trendsetter in these areas over the years. I think that weve found interesting and innovative details solutions once again. Project R17 began in May 2010, a month later the green light was given to use the A5 as base model. Tests in the model wind tunnel have been running since February 2011. The roll-out was completed on 29 July 2011. Afterwards, the intensive test program started at various European race tracks and continued to the Deutscher Motor Sport Bund (DMSB) homologation date on March 1, 2012. Since then, the most important technical aspects on the new DTM cars were frozen for the rest of the season including the still all important aerodynamic configuration. As usual, for this reason, all three manufacturers kept their final aero configuration as secret as possible to the last moment. In the DTM this year even more value is attached to every tiny detail than ever before, knows Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. And, it goes without saying that we have developed

over the last few month we also wish to keep to ourselves for as long as possible. For the Head of Audi Motorsport the A5 DTM is the most elegant of the new DTM cars. Furthermore, the A5 is from its base a car that fits fantastically well to the DTM. Michael Dick, Member of the Board for Technical Development and consequently also responsible for the AUDI AG DTM program, shares the enthusiasm for the Coup: I particularly like the fact that the lines of the production A5 are easily recognizable. The most important areas of the new DTM cars are frozen since

Audi with the youngest driver line-up in the DTM 2012

Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich began rejuvenating his driver squad several years ago with success: For the 2011 DTM season we had the strongest driver squad ever, says the Head of Audi Sport knowingly. Eight of the nine drivers mounted the podium at least once. In addition, they won seven of the ten races for Audi and clinched the championship title. Audi has rejuvenated its driver squad once again for the 2012 season. New to the team is the youthful 21-year old Frenchman Adrien Tambay, who impressed at a young driver assessment test and now tackles his first DTM season. As a result, Audi remains true to its philosophy of supporting budding young talent. You will not find any former Formula1 stars at the brand with the four rings. We want drivers who make a name for themselves at Audi and who are closely associated with the brand. Mattias Ekstrm, Timo Scheider, Mike Rockenfeller and Edoardo Mortara are excellent examples of this. At an average age of almost 27, Audi contests the DTM 2012 with the youngest driver squad among the three manufacturers. The pair of two-time DTM Champions Mattias Ekstrm and Timo Scheider, who have scored all their 23 DTM race wins and titles with Audi, form the spearhead. Mike Rockenfellers name can also already be found in the list of winners of the most popular international touring car series. Filipe Albuquerque, Miguel Molina and Edoardo Mortara were the most successful newcomers in the DTM in the last two years and the three of them have also mounted the podium. The Audi squad is completed by Rahel Frey who Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich thinks will spring a surprise or two during the 2012 season.

Timo Scheider (D)

Timo Scheider drives for Audi in the DTM since 2006. In 2007 he changed his year-old car for the latest generation; in 2008 and 2009 he won the title twice in succession with Audi Sport Team Abt Sportsline. Scheider is the only driver in the current field who was also on the grid when the DTM made its comeback in 2000. Accordingly, no other driver has completed more DTM races than Scheider despite taking a year out in 2005. apart from his own discipline he also follows karting, biathlon, football and boxing? ... the two-time DTM Champion spends as much time as possible with his son Loris? he has a soft spot for watches, mobile telephones and sun glasses? the Audi factory driver regularly receives invitations to the TV events organized by Stefan Raab? ... Audi Sport Team Phoenix

Audi Sport Team Phoenix achieved a spectacular coup in the DTM in 2011: for the first time ever a team proved triumphant in the DTM with a yearold car. Phoenix Racing was founded in 1999 and has contested the series without interruption since the DTM comeback in the year 2000 and as Audi factory team since 2006. Winning the DTM title is the greatest victory to date in the history of the young Eifel based team, which celebrated its tenth anniversary in 2009 and wrote the first chapters of its success story in 1999 with the Audi A4 quattro in Super Touring Cars. Under the management of Team Boss Ernst Moser twenty six employees tend to the 2012 DTM program. Phoenix Racing contests selected endurance races with the new Audi R8 LMS ultra in parallel to the DTM involvement. Phoenix Racing started the season in great style by winning the 12-hour race at Bathurst. The team is based in the Meuspath business park directly at the Nrburgring.

Audi Sport Team Rosberg

Keke Rosberg, Formula 1 World Champion in 1982, founded his own race team at the end of 1994. The squad has since made a name for itself in touring car and singleseater racing. Victory in the German Formula 3 Championship with Gary Paffett in 2002 numbers among the teams outstanding victories. Young Formula 1 star Nico Rosberg also made his first motorsport steps with his fathers team. The team based in Neustadt an der Weinstrae and managed by Arno Zensen was active in the old DTM in the 1990s with Klaus Ludwig and Hans-Joachim Stuck as drivers. Team Rosberg has been a part of the new DTM since the beginning. In2005 the team concentrated solely on formula racing before returning to the DTM as Audi factory team in2006. The team signed Finn Ossi Oikarinen, who has years of Formula1 experience, as new Technical Director. A total of 26employees work for the team in the 2012 DTM.

The DTM

Touring car racing at the very highest level

DTM which was once an abbreviation for Deutsche Tourenwagen Meisterschaft is today the trademark for one of the worlds most important race series. The magical three letters do not only attract an average of 60,000 spectators to the race tracks and millions in front of the TV screens the DTM events are also an enjoyable experience for the entire family. Moderate admission prices, special offers for children, automobile manufacturer brand world exhibition displays as well as an attractive supporting program on and off the race track with live concerts and much, much more give fans and families great value for money and motorsport so close you can touch it. The competition on the race tracks is at the very highest level. The DTM enjoys the status, and rightly so, as one of the best touring car race series, says Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. In 2012 we have the chance to create the worlds best touring car series. Together with the DMSB and the ITR, Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz have developed new, trend-setting regulations that set new standards especially in the fields of safety, cost and desirability of the cars.

The DTM provides the worlds highest caliber touring cars

Typical DTM: exciting duels and packed grandstands

The fans can form a picture for themselves at eleven events staged during the 2012 season. Ten races are held and on top of these, like last year, a show event is staged in the Munich Olympic stadium, which attracted over 54,000 spectators on its premiere. The strong foundation for the three competing automobile manufacturers Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz is the important domestic German market which boasts a total

62,000 spectators attended

each DTM race in 2011. The three way dogfight between Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz should attract even more fans in 2012

of seven events. Complementing these are guest races in Great Britain, Austria, the Netherlands and Spain. DTM relies on continuity this year: all eleven DTM events were on the calendar in 2011. A gradual internationalization of the DTM brand is being developed for the future. The DTM is already present on TV in almost every one of the 194 countries worldwide. Races in Asia are currently in discussion. The DTM aims to establish itself together with the GRAND AM organization in the USA, discussions regarding a possible cooperation with Japan are also being held.

Mattias Ekstrm: The season opener at Hockenheim is always something very special for us drivers, since its all completely new; from the hospitality to the team clothing. The first race gives an idea of balance of performance in the new season. Itll be particularly exciting this year due to the new cars and the third manufacturer. The atmosphere at Hockenheim is always amazing the fans are really eager to see all the cars in action. The season opener is normally blessed by wonderful spring weather. Hockenheim is also a fantastic circuit for the first race: it allows you to get into a good rhythm and has a good variety of corners. However, there is only one good place to overtake which is before the hairpin, unless a competitor makes a mistake.

Timo Scheider: On this track you need a car that functions well both mechanically and aerodynamically since the Lausitzring has a mixture of both fast and slow corners. Entering turn 1 is a particularly good place to overtake; you have to use the tow down the long straight. Going into turn5 which takes you onto the short circuit is another good opportunity the circuit is wide here and there is plenty of space. The smooth tarmac which doesnt have much grip is typical for the Lausitzring. I like this modern facility. The background with its towering grandstands is very imposing especially when you drive out of the pits for the first time. By the way, the grandstands are perfect for the fans because the spectators can see almost the entire track from them. All winners since 2001

Mattias Ekstrm: A typical English race track. It is small and bumpy in places. You cant afford to make a mistake because there are virtually no run-off areas. Ive had a mixture of good and bad experiences here. Like the Norisring, Brands Hatch has very few corners. However, they are very special, especially the first corner. The circuit which is also the shortest on the DTM calendar has very few places to overtake. A lot is said about the typical English weather, but weve only ever had rain here once when the DTM has visited. The Brands Hatch track normally has good grip, but the organizers have made some modifications over the years so that weve often had a few small surprises in first practice.

Rahel Frey: The race track in Spielberg is my favorite in the DTM calendar. I felt immediately at home here in 2011. The atmosphere was amazing; you really sensed how the fans celebrated. Spielberg is also a track with great motorsport history, which obviously blends perfectly into its natural surroundings. The brakes are heavily stressed due to the many uphill and downhill sections. If you make a mistake it has a great affect since you lose time on the next uphill section. There are several good overtaking places. You can follow the rhythm of the track very easily; Spielberg certainly suits drivers with a gentle driving style.

Filipe Albuquerque: The only street circuit on the DTM calendar is something quite special. The atmosphere is unique. The grandstands are always sold-out and the paddock is absolutely crowded. The Norisring is, however, much harder for us drivers than it actually appears. As outsider you think: just three corners that cant be so difficult. Because the circuit is very bumpy you have to hit the braking point exactly every lap. The track surface is special; there are several sections with a kind of concrete surface, which is very slippery in the rain. In turns 2 and 3 you have to drive very close, so close in fact that the mirrors are often damaged. After all you have to use every millimeter of the track. Overtaking is very difficult, the best chance is under braking for turn 1 and into the final corner.

Edoardo Mortara: Munich represents a completely different DTM to the rest of the calendar. We drove in the Olympic stadium for the first time a year ago. As a racing driver you are used to fighting head to head with other, but here you drive alone against the clock. You drive the whole time in first and second gears, the speed is low. From the technical point of view you have to drive extremely clean, otherwise it gets very expensive in a flash. In 2011 the walls were made of concrete. This year plastic elements are also used. The pit stops take a bit of getting used to. Last year I had mixed feelings. On one hand I was the best Audi driver here and was awarded my first DTM trophy. On the other I had an accident on Sunday to conclude the event. All winners

Adrien Tambay: One of the key points is the first corner which is very technical. The last chicane is also important. Its crucial to have a good balance and excellent traction out of the slow corners in order to be able to overtake at the end of the long straight. I really like this track. In 2007, I competed in a single-seater series for young talents which was part of the support program for the Formula 1 Grand Prix and finished on the podium for the first time, which is why I have fond memories of the Nrburgring. Ive only ever raced with formula cars here before, now Im intrigued to see the track from a touring car. The biggest difference is certainly that I can now drive across the kerbs. The weather in the Eifel can change very quickly, which adds a little more spice to the exciting races. All winners since 2000

Mike Rockenfeller: The circuit is situated in a great place. Running through the dunes and close to the sea makes it unique. However, sand frequently collects alongside the ideal line; you shouldnt stray off line as you dont want to lose any grip. This is extremely important in qualifying. Zandvoort is one of the best tracks on the calendar for me: a traditional track with plenty of character, it is fast, has very few run-off areas and several blind corners. I particularly like the right-hand downhill section after the crest. There are several places to overtake at Zandvoort. You can really take advantage of mistakes the competition make here. Furthermore, the atmosphere among the many spectators is fantastic. Something thats quiet unique in Zandvoort is that fans can combine a trip to the beach with the DTM race. All winners since 2001

Timo Scheider: Oschersleben is a very special track for me. It has a mixture of fast and slow corners and is very selective. The track is not very wide; there are also several sections where you have to drive hard over the kerbs in a touring car. As a rule, overtaking is very difficult you have the opportunity in Turn 1 and in the final corner. Otherwise you only have a chance if the driver in front makes a mistake. It goes without saying therefore that qualifying is extremely important for us. The pit stops are just as important since the pit lane is extremely long. I have fond memories of Oschersleben as I celebrated my first DTM win here. The atmosphere is always great, you notice that there is very little motorsport in Northern Germany the fans and very interested and appreciative. All winners since 2000

Miguel Molina: As a driver the most noticeable feature is that the track runs anti-clockwise. The majority of race tracks run the opposite way round. Valencia has several very fast corners like corners 1 and 8. Overtaking is possible in the second and final corners. Special for Valencia is also that it is usually very hot; this affects the tires and the technology. Great demands are made of the drivers fitness here. I like Valencia: its my home DTM race. All my friends and many fans are here and there is a fantastic atmosphere. This is motivation enough for me.

Mattias Ekstrm: The track is particularly interesting through its mix of corners. There are several very slow corners like corner 2 and the hairpin, but also very fast kinks like turn 1 or the entry into the Motodrom. I particularly like the layout since the track was modified ten years ago. In the Parabolika corner, which was added at that time, you can set-up yourself perfectly to overtake the car in front. Earlier we measured the gaps at Hockenheim in half-seconds. Over the course of the years they have reduced to just a tenth. And with the new car generation for 2012 I can guarantee that well have to look for the hundredths in order to make the difference. The flair at Hockenheim is particularly great. Many spectators visit the finale every year.

History: Audi in the DTM

Audis success story in the DTM

Rally cars, Pikes Peak hillclimb cars, US race cars, LeMans sportscars or touring cars: everywhere, where Audi competed, the drivers celebrated wins and championship titles in the sign of the four rings. Audi is involved as factory in motorsport for more than 30 years; the success story in the DTM began 22 years ago with the V8 quattro. Legendary V8 days Audi cleaned up big time with the large V8 quattro: the first two DTM championship titles went to Ingolstadt in 1990 and 1991 with Hans-Joachim Stuck and Frank Biela. The powerful 309 kW (420 hp) V8 engines and the four-wheel drive quattro was regarded as the combination to beat. The

It won the title five times in eight years and is, as a result, the most successful DTM touring car of this era. Mattias Ekstrm triumphed in 2004 and 2007,

Timo Scheider followed in 2008 and 2009. Audi was, as a consequence, the first manufacturer in the DTM to celebrate a hat-trick with three successive championships. Martin Tomczyk clinched another title in 2011 the first for a year-old car in DTM history.
